my boyf and i are not in the least bit religious, but we want to give our baby a 'naming ceremony', an alternative to a christening where both sides of our family get together (they still havent met, after six-and-a-half years!) and make our siblings "godparents", and officially acknowledge our babys arrival. but we dont really kno what our options are and how to go about arranging one. i'd like to do it b4 the end of september while its still warm with light evenings, so i guess we should start finding out a bit about it. anyone kno anything about these? thanx!

I am the same me and my husband had a humanist wedding- An alternative to a religious ceremony and we could basically get married where we wanted and say/include anything we wanted. It made it really special and individual. I know they do naming ceremonies aswell. We are thinking about having the lady who married us do a ceremony for when baby arrives.
If you lok up The brittish humanist society or humanist ceremonies on the net it will bring up the info and a list of people who do the ceremonies in yur area. Thats how we found ours.
Its good as you get to say what you want so it can be as formal/informal as you like. You dont have to be a humanist or anything either its just an alternative to religious ceremonies. Everyone who came t our wedding commented on how lovely the service was although hardly any of our guests knew what to expect or had heard of a humanist service beore. Its worth a look though.
Hope this helps. :)

Hiya hun, we are doing the same because my DF is atheist...

see http://www.humanism.org.uk/site/cms/contentviewarticle.asp?article=1174

for more info...then you can put your area in and it will give yuou contact details for celebrants in your area.

We are using a hotel and a buffet supplied for £12 per head and that includes room hire too and for travelling guests we are getting discounted rooms :)
