My Lo is 2 weeks old today. She lost 12% body weight the first week and we were admitted to hospital for observation this day last week. They thought she might have reflux and gave me carobel to put in her feed. One week on and she's gaining weight, the thing is about 4-5 days ago she developed baby acne which has steadily worsened. She has red, puss filled pimples all over face. Health visitor saw her today for first time and thinks she might have a cows milk protein allergy. She's a generally content little thing and I'm reluctant to change her food again as she's had breast milk, aptimal, aptimal anti reflux, then back to aptimal with carobel and she's only two weeks old! Has anyone any experience with acne with a newborn and what causes/remedies did you find? Thank you x

My little girl had it for about a month. It's totally normal according to our Hv. Here's a pic of her.... ImageUploadedByTapatalk1434657594.903386.jpg

She was exclusively breastfed but I don't think that matters. Surely if it was an allergy you'd see other signs? I say go with your instincts x

Look into Cow milk protein allergy! its very common and affects around 20% of babies.

Ask you HV or GP. but do your research online first and make sure you know what your talking about as they don't like to prescribe the milk, as its expensive. The milk they would try to begin with is Nutramigen.

My midwife (who is old school) didn't seem to like it being called baby acne but rather just their skins reaction to all of a sudden being exposed to air and all the rubbish that comes with it. If it is this then it's just a case of riding it out as far as I'm aware and not using soap on their face, but as Nicky says go with your instincts x

Harry had this too, n our mw n hv weren't fussed when they saw him n it cleared up within the month I think.

Michelle.x

It's quite red and inflamed and looks really sore. I feel so helpless not knowing what to do! HV has suggested leaving her over the weekend to see if it improves/deteriorates and then decide which course of action to take. It's got progressively worse today. Aaaaarg!

I'm just trying to find a pic of jasmines at its worst. Is she showing any other signs of being intolerant? Or just the acne? X

The rash on her was is more pronounced than on this

Looks very similar to when my little girls was at it's worst. Personally I wouldn't worry but I know how hard it is not to worry when they are so tiny.

I would say tho that if she isn't showing any other signs of intolerance then that's a good thing? But your her mummy and you know her best x

She's normally quite content. She does have reflux and had problems with the weight loss, but apart from that she's great. I just don't know what to do. Hope it'll pass. How long did it take for your little girls to pass? Did she get it so early? 1.5 weeks? My son had it, but he got it at about 3 weeks and he was very unsettled.

Hold on a second... I thought baby acne was due to the mother's hormones left over from pregnancy, and should clear out by about week 12???

So much conflicting info out there...

I've been googling like hell and came across that info too. I wish somebody could say, "this is what it is and this is how you make her comfortable!" ;-)

Big bee the HV wasn't sure whether it was baby acne or whether it was caused by good intolerance because baby acne usually presents itself from 3-6 weeks and she developed this just after one week.

I'm If you're concerned about it, take your LO to the doctors. Hopefully they will be able to advise you on it and maybe prescribe some cream to help if it's particularly bad. They can also test for intolerance. I wouldn't change the milk onto the stuff for allergies or intolerances before speaking to the doctor.

I'm honestly beginning to wonder if that's what was wrong with my eldest. He had bad silent reflux, was a very grumpy baby and I was thinking today he always had awful poos compared to my youngest. He also had bad baby acne compared to my youngest who's had a few milk spots on his nose. He's been having cows milk and dairy though since six months with no obvious issues though so who knows!

She developed it at 2 weeks and was gone within 4 weeks of it starting x

Google suggested the above...self diagnosis not the best thing to do. At wit send though!

My little girl had it for about a month and is exclusively breast fed and I don't drink milk or have much dairy at all so allergy was ruled out. In the end I went to GP and they prescribed Hydromol ointment and Hydromol bath wash and it cleared within a week. I will attach a picture as hers was pretty awful at worst x

P.S she also had it all over her scalp in her hair.
