Well, here goes my story...
Was overdue by 2 days, which I was pretty shocked about as had really thought second babies came earlier than first ones, and my first was a day early. Hadn't had a show, a twinge, nothing.
Off I went to the midwife and she gave me a sweep, and told me I was already 3cm and 100% effaced. Was chuffed, but read into it a bit when I got home and convinced myself it wouldn't make any difference and I'd still be pregnant for days.
And so at 40+3, I woke up at 5.30am cause of our stupid dog, and then at 6am thought I had a pain that just felt like baby getting into an uncomfy position, but went away, and then came back again 10 mins later. Started timing things around 7am, got dressed but was still in a bit of denial really. When OH woke up at 7.30am told him I thought it might be happening, and he got dressed too.
By 8.30am I was timing 6 mins apart on average, and so rang my nan to come and pick up my sister (13yrs) who was staying with us for a few days. She arrived at 9am, and I was in quite a lot of pain then with each contraction, breathing through them the best I could.
Rang delivery suite and they said give it 30 mins, and then call back if my waters broke by themselves.
By 9.20am knew we had to go, so got in the car, got to the hospital carpark, realised we'd forgotten my notes, drove back, got them, and then went back to the hospital! Luckily, we literally live the next road along from the hospital!
By this point I was saying 'ow ow ow' with each contraction, but was still bareable. When we were in reception managed to just close my eyes and breath through a few, didn't want to look too scary to all the other pregnant ladies!
Got into a delivery room, introduced to our lovely midwife, and she did my obs and then gave me an examination. I'd already said I wanted an epidural like I'd had last time around.
She examined me, and found I was already 9cms, so she said there really wasn't much point having an epidural as he'll have arrived before it would have kicked in. I was pretty scared about doing it on its own, but she assured me it wouldn't be long, and it wouldn't get any worse apart from the actual head crowning moment, so I thought, why not! Lets go for it!
I had never wanted gas and air as I had it once before and it just made me feel very sick and spaced out, but she said to just try a little as I was starting to shout quite loud each contraction. So I did for a few of the contractions, less than half of them I'd say, think it did help a little, although did feel very sleepy after a few sucks.
At around 11am she asked if I wanted my waters broken to bring him on, so she did that, and within a few contractions I had pushed him right down to crowning. That HURT. Had no interest in gas then as wanted to be awake, focused and as strong as possible to do this. I freaked out for a minute, midwife had to shout at me to calm down, and then through small pushes and little breathes, I pushed his head out. 2 minutes later I delivered his shoulders, and out he slipped. Best feeling in the whole world, being free of any pain, and being handed your beautiful baby. 11.36am, here he was. OH cut the cord and he was a real person!
Skin to skin for about 15 mins, placenta delivered easily, she then weighed him and I was surprised to find he was 8lbs 7oz!
No stitches needed, OH had a cuddle, tried a feed but he had no interest, so Austin got dressed, I had a quick bath, and wheeled down to the baby ward.
Settled down in a room with 5 other ladies, and then he had a feed. Fed and pooed all day long, didn't cry once.
Ended up staying in as they thought my heartbeat was irregular, was desperate to get home but oh well, made it back today at lunchtime and he's been brilliant and still hasn't cried. Couple of squawks when he was getting a bit hungry, but no noise really. He even slept last night from 11.30pm until 9am this morning. I tried to feed him at around 6am but he had no interest, and again at 8am but still nothing, so just left him till he woke up himself and he was fine.
So there's my birth story, am so proud of myself for getting to 9cms by myself, and for doing to last bit with just some gas and air. Feeding is going well, although by george the contraction type pains of my uterus getting back to shape are pretty painful, and one nipple has already started bleeding, but not going to stop me one bit. Have to get some Lansinoh tomorrow.
Tummy looks about the same as 5 months pregnant I reckon, but fingers crossed I'll be back to normal within a couple of weeks like last time.
And after one 9 month wait and a brilliant outcome, tomorrow is officially 9 months to the wedding, so there's another countdown. And as we're planning our 3rd as a honeymoon baby, that'll be the next 9 month wait. After this birth, and the faffing around about letting me go home afterwards, I 100% want to have the next one at home. Am almost looking forward to it!
