My OH sister is 16 and just had a baby, so while her parents go on holiday in August they've asked us to move in there with her so she's not alone, which is fine I don't mind 1 bit........ Except they have a cat (which im scared of usually anyway). Although I know it's a friendly cat I've never seen it even playfully harm any1 it just looks evil to me now I've seen it around a baby lol. I've told my mother in law my concerns and she insists that the cat will be fine around the babies as he "just sits watching her sleep" which I do not like the sound of either lmao. Does anyone else have any experience with cats? What can I do to make sure it stays away from my baby? Xxx

You can buy nets for cots and prams that stop cats getting near babies when they're sleeping. But I'm maybe not the best person to give advice cos I don't have cats and am kinda scared of them myself!! They're a bit aloof!!

I have kitties and have been told that as a precaution you can get nets to stop kitties getting near baby.

Most cats wouldn't want to get near baby for any reason other than they are warm (hot water bottle syndrome). So rather than worry about scratches etc (which would only happen if baby hit kitty really) you would want to ensure kitty cant sleep on the baby.

As you are not too keen on cats I would suggest a net would be best, as I know my cats well I know I can train em to keep away from baby bed (water gun helps with training :) )

I have two cats and had concerns about their reactions to baby. I was advised to get a tea towel/muslin/blanket etc, and fill it with Johnsons talcum powder (to smell like baby), tie it up and put it in the middle of the room. Every time the cats go near to tell them off. They soon learn to leave it alone! And because it smells like baby, it works with baby too! Quite a clever idea I thought!

Thanks for ur replies girls :) he's been around my oh's sisters baby since she's been born and never tried anything so maybe I'm being paranoid? I'm just going to not leave the baby alone with the cat during the day and at night take the baby to bed when I go up to bed and close the door so the cat can't get in, I'm just nervous lol xxxx
