Hi lovely ladies,
I am WTT and was recently diagnosed with
PCOS. I am not overweight- b m I of 22.5. I am not currently under a consultant gynaecologist so was wondering if anyone knows why some PCOS people are prescribed metformin and others are not....? :eh:
I also have been advised by a friend with PCOS to drastically reduce all sugar in take, yikes!
I am hopeful that I can also get my tubes checked as have heard this is necessary before anyone will prescribe fertility meds eg.clomid.

Would love to hear advice and or comments. Thanks! Xxxx

I take metformin 2000mg a day...it took about 6months to get them to prescribe it to me. It has helped regulate my periods from getting 1 every 2 months 2 a regular cycle every 33days but now I'm on clomid it has been a 28 day cycle. I once never had a period for 6months.
Some people don't respond to metformin but others do. I kept going back to the hospital and I think in the end they just prescribed it lol but I weren't ttc when they did I just wanted to get everything regulated for when we did decide to start ttc.

Hey

I too have PCOS (only diagnosed in June but suspected I had it for a long time before that). I struggled to get a diagnosis because tests showed I ovulated on my own and I didn't have typical symptoms - but scans showed my ovaries were polycystic looking and my periods were regular but heavy, painful and I'd have up to 2 weeks(!) of spotting beforehand.

I am not overweight either. I had to really push to get metformin - they initially said it wouldn't work because I'm not overweight (I was 8 stone when I started treatment). I started it in September, 1500mg a day, and my last scans showed normal looking ovaries (no cysts!) and I had a very normal, painless period too. I had IVF treatment last month which unfortunately was unsuccessful but I am still optimistic we will get pregnant at some point. Also, I only got 9 eggs from IVF (PCOS ladies often get 30+!), 8 were suitable for the treatment (so, mature enough), 6 fertilised and all 6 were very good quality and made it to day 5 (they do transfers on day 3 if they don't think they will survive to day 5). That is definitely not the result of a typical PCOS lady and I honestly believe metformin is to thank! However, I have lost weight which is why they are reluctant to give it to skinny ladies.

A friend of mine is undergoing treatment at the same clinic - also skinny, also PCOS - however, they will not give her metformin and told her to take inositol instead (a milder version). They told her chromium picolinate was fine too (something I used when they refused to give me metformin and it stopped my spotting!).

As for diet... Yes, avoid refined sugar as much as possible! Swap white bread, pasta etc for brown. Also cut down your white potatoes (hard, I know). The inositol and chromium should help until you get metformin though.

Sorry this is so long, but I hope it helps. I hate PCOS! Xxx
