Am I in labour?!

I'm 40+1 and saw the midwife today. She did a stretch and sweep and said I was 2-3 cm dilated and officially in the early stages of labour. She also said she flet the baby's head! I haven't had any contractions yet although have had:
- some lower back pain
- some period like pains (although not in waves like contraction-type pains)
- had some 'show' a week or so ago

The other thing is that I get what feels like the baby moving in my tummy and my tummy hardens for a moment. Its really only a moment though, and I think its the baby moving, although could this be a contraction? Its not painful at all.

Has anyone else had anything like this? I.e. non-painful contractions? Or is it just the baby moving?

My worry is that it is labour and I won't get to the hospital in time before the baby arrives because I'm not having normal type contractions!!

I would personally sit and relax and just spend an hour noting down when and for how long your bump hardens. Its brilliant that youve got to 2-3cm!

It can happen that women dont feel contractions at all, so you might be one of those women! Like I say though, could be an idea just trying to figure out how long and the intensity your bump is hardening.

Sounds like your having braxton hicks which are practice contractions. I dont think it'll be long before labour properly kicks off! x.

I wasn't having any contractions with my LO and I went in hosp to be induced and I was already 3cm! I was shocked lol.

I would do as whats been mentioned, monitor it for an hour or so and if ur concerned, contact ur midwife Hun.

I got my 2nd sweep today. I'm 2-3cm dilated and getting period cramps. This however happened on Tuesday when I had first sweep and developed into contractions but they stopped at 2am. I dont think you are in labour yet, you will know when it starts believe me. I'm sitting here analysing every twinge and hope it will start things off. Last pregnancy I gave birth 12 days after my sweep but all pregnancies different. I would not worry yourself, the pains will come....
