Anyone else find it gives you different readings?

James felt so hot a few weeks ago but his temp was normal. I was so sure he was running a temperature that I took it a few more times with the thermometer and sure enough the second and third readings were 38c!!!

Ever since I have not trusted the thermometer until I get two identical readings in a row. Sometimes the readings are a degree different!!! Madness.

James is a wriggly one year old so taking his temp is not easy anyway.

Is that the one that scans the forehead?

We have one of them ones, and sometimes its a bit off, but we always do a couple in a row, because it all depends on distance from the head etc.

Hubby is currently scannin his head every 30 seconds because he's poorly :wall2:

We have a simple under the armpit one and its been pretty accurate everytime x

Last 4 readings (all taken in same ear, one after another)

38.5c
36.6c
38c
35.8c

We have this thermometer and I've found if it's not in the ear properly it gives different readings!! My lo is just under 8 months though so a little easier to get hold of! She had a fever last week and we were pretty much taking it every 2 hours and it was pretty accurate...I'm a bit paranoid so do the best of 3 anyway!! It's the same one as our gp surgery use so I trust it...I think!

My GP uses it too!

In-fact every Dr I've seen (we have several at our practice) use it.

I do jam it in his ear, but unless he is asleep he wriggles...

Gah, prior to a fortnight ago I barely had to use the damn thing and now I am like a mad woman with it...

Where I live (non UK) they have removed all these from the hospitals and reverted to the trusty under arm type because they are so unreliable. I don't even own a thermometer of any sort, if you are having to take the reading twice it sounds like a pain in the butt.

Same in our trust. They only use under the arm in paediatrics

We have a brother max forehead and ear thermometer and its crap!

I've got a tommee tippee in ear one and have the same problem, but only with my LO?! It always picks mine up as 37, LO it picks up as anything between 34 and 36?!

I only use it if LO feels hot to the touch.

Yep ours is the same. Varies wildly. Last time she had a fever I tried to double check with a digital basal one under arm but she wasn't having it!

If you hold the ear and pull it gently then put the ear thermometer in as far as it will go it gives pretty accurate readings,it can give falsecreadings if not used properly...in our ward we have under the arm ones but are big digital ones...my gp surgery use yhe brauun ear one x

I can't hold the ear and the baby at the same time :wall2: :wall2:

Maybe that is the issue!

The 1 I have is eat and forehead and I use the ear first and then forehead it's normally identical or a .2difference and I've had the armpit 1 hate it trying to get Ava to keep still long enough to do it and was advices in the hospital that they're the least accurate that way x

Yes, I have noticed this too Nat, but do think it's how snug it fits in the ear and how far you put it in. Think it's a 2 man job really xx

I'm going to go on instinct now!

I can clearly feel when James is too hot (hence me noticing the thermometer varies wildly from reading to reading)

Think I'll only use it when he feels hot to touch and make sure I get a very similar reading twice in a row.

The under the armpit one isn't going to work, he doesn't sit still for a minute
