Sorry for your news.

On the practical side as to what to expect, at 61/2 weeks, not a lot is the answer, fortunately. (Believe me, since I had the first scan at 7 weeks, each time I get scanned, I've been boring the midwife silly with questions as to what to expect should I miscarry each week!)

At your stage in pregnancy, the gestational sac (which would later contain the embryo) would be somewhere around 17mm in diameter. It's unlikely you'd see an embryo as such - the most you'd usually see at this stage is a yolk sac (develops during week 5) and foetal pole (during week 6) within that gestational sac. I'm now at 10 weeks, with the sac measuring 8weeks, and I've been told to expect a blood clot that may appear to be greyish jelly, around 3cm in diameter. I've also been told to expect lots of stringy dark stuff, lumps of tissue and random blood clots. Can't wait for the party to begin...

If you pass a cyst, which is also common in early pregnancy/miscarriage, you'd expect it to be round, jelly-like and up to 5cm in diameter - so a fair bit bigger.

When I had an early miscarriage last November, it was very early indeed - I think around 5w4 - and I had two hours of very heavy bleeding, but essentially it was a very heavy period that lasted a couple of days longer, with some really black stringy stuff, followed by a few days of spotting.

I will also be having a scan to check everything has passed. Maybe you will too? I was told that I would certainly know if I had an infection - it would be accompanied by fever and foul-smelling discharge. If I get a fever temp, I should phone the hospital immediately and go straight in. Guess the same applies to you.

sorry this is all so unpleasant, but hope it helps.
