On Friday 14th I was 1 week and 1 day overdue and booked to go for an induction at LGI on Sunday. I really didn't want to be induced as I wanted a water birth and I'd heard inductions could be lengthy and more painful.
I had a sweep Friday morning and was told things were favourable and crossed my fingers that things would progress naturally. Throughout the day I had some tightenings, wasn't really sure if it was early labour or not. By 7pm I knew they were definitely contractions, it felt like really strong period pains. My midwife sister came over at 11pm and told me I was 2-3cm and advised I should go to bed, get rest and I would probably deliver tomorrow. Well I tried to go to bed, bad idea far too painful to relax and lie down, so got in the bath. At 2am Sat 15th my contractions were around about 3mins apart, very strong and were quite painful so rang the hospital, they said that my contractions weren't uniformed enough and although they were 3ish mins apart some lasted 30 secs and some 1min, they said I should wait for them to be uniformed and last the same amount of time and to ring back in an hour or so.
So I got back in the bath and my sister came back round to support me and OH. I stayed in the bath as it was so relaxing and really helped with the contractions, I felt in control and the pain was manageable, we listened to show tunes and monitored my contractions. They never got to be a uniformed time or length. At 4:30am I felt what can only be described as an explosion from my vagina (sorry :S), it was my waters breaking and I felt like the baby's head was coming, I went from serene calm to panic mode in a split second. We rang the hospital and they said to ring an ambulance. I had the choice to go to my preferred hospital LGI (for water birth) but Dewsbury was closer, I didn't care about my birth plan I just wanted to be in a hospital now! The paramedics came into the bathroom and gave me gas and air which was a huge relief. I was then transferred to hospital, I could feel pressure downstairs like the head was coming and I was scared I was going to give birth on route to hospital (apparently the pressure was another pocket of water). When I got to hospital I was 10cm dilated and all stations go as there was meconium present.
After 58mins of pushing at hospital my baby boy Finnley was born. His cord was round his neck twice and I had a second degree tear, but he was absolutely fine. I did it all on just gas and air as there wouldn't have been enough time for drugs to kick in before I delivered. I couldn't even have paracetamol as they said I would just throw it back up.
Finn was only 6lb and the placenta showed some sign of deterioration, so we think the poor little thing hadn't been fed right for the last few weeks. Unfortunately my midwife wasn't the best and rarely told me my measurements or wrote them down, she just wrote 'measurements good', looking back I should have and was going to challenge this, but I felt so well and baby was moving well, i'd had a text book perfect pregnancy and I didn't want to cause a fuss or get my midwife in trouble. Luckily I had a fast labour but things could have been very different, if it had been a long dragged out induction labour he would prob not have had they energy required and would have ended in emergency section. But luckily everything was fine and he's piling on the pounds now and we are completely in love with him.
I stayed in the hospital for 12hours to monitor him to ensure there was no ill effect from the meconium, which there wasn't. I was up and showered 3 hours after having him and felt really well all things considered.
The paramedics and delivery team at the hospital were amazing, I can't thank them enough.
