*Oops meant to post this in tri 2 blame pregnancy brain!!!*
I just decided i really fancied tuna, mayo and pasta...and was unsure wether i am allowed mayo. I went trawling through some old posts and found you arnt supposed to eat nuts if you have any allergies!!! Why did no one tell me this? Middy just gave me a sheet saying; no cat litter, liver, pate, raw eggs, cook everything properly. I have loads of allergies and dont want the pass them on to my baby as its horrible to have :( worried now! I eat peanuts all the time..if i had known i wouldnt have. What else am i doing wrong :wall:

I thought i'd pop in and reply.
Yea you know we're not supposed to eat mr whippy ice cream as well! my favourite thing ever!!

I look at it this way, when my mum was pregnant the rules were so different its unreal. When our kids are pregnant it will be the same. It seems to change every month what we can and cant eat so other then the obvious big stuff like liver ant pate and cooking everything properly i pretty much eat what i like. I know there will be shock horror at this but i have quite a balanced diet, yes i have allergies but surely if the baby was goinbg to be allergic to nuts having them around whilst there still inside would get them used to them, surely preventing allergic reations?
Its just the way i see it. How can we religiously follow rules when they change so frequently? can they be soo dangerous if our mums were doing it?
Everyone does what they think is best this is personally how i feel :)

I agree- they get told different things elsewhere too- my sister in law was pg in France (10 years ago mind- might have changed) and they said nothing about unpasturised cheese or runny/cream cheeses (Brie etc) but told them to always wash lettuce leaves- in fact the lettuce advice was right at the top! She told me this when I was about 7 months gone with Mel and had eaten a LOT of most probably unwashed lettuce so I ad a panic but....?

To be honest I wouldn't worry about the nuts you've already eaten. I have a milk intolerance so have allergies of a kind and yet because I'm a veggie they told me to keep eating nuts anyway for protein. If there's a nut allergy in your family then maybe it's worth avoiding them but otherwise I think it depends on whether you're getting a balanced diet without them.

store brought mayo is fine to have, but not home made. a little amount of tuna is ok (too much is said to possibly cause damadge due to the metal cans)
and i read that peanuts in excess can make baby more likely to develope allergies later. i wouldnt worry about a few, just try to limit them a little. other nuts are fine.

as for soft cheese such as brie....it can carry listeria which can be fatal if caught by a pregnant woman.

I take a similar relaxed attitude. I'm sure some people would be horrified to hear that I don't follow the "rules" to the letter but as they change so often then how are you to know what is right or wrong?

Even in the 3 years since I had Lucy the advice about peanuts has changed. 3 years ago I was told not to eat them at all. This time it was only to avoid them if there is a family history of peanut allergy.

I have a varied diet where I don't eat too much of one thing and figure that everything in moderation is ok. I have even had the odd glass of wine. The cases where problems have been found have always been where someone has had too much.

In terms of runny eggs/soft cheese etc. I don't eat much but when I do am careful where I get it from and how its cooked etc.

Re the peanut thing don't worry - they are currently reviewing the advice as since they have started telling you not to eat peanuts it hasn't affected the allergy rates at all. I had a chat with my mw because I thought it was duff info last time (how do you get immunity to something you have never been exposed to?) and she said it was only ever advice in the UK and was never tested before they gave it.
