sleep the first few months?

I thought I had it sorted out but I'm still confused :? Any feedback would be appreciated...
Loooong story here we go...... :bored:

Y'day we ordered our travel system, cot bed, mattress and nappy changer with bath and chest of drawers which I was totally happy with ... but now i'm not so sure anymore. We thought we now have all we need for the first few months and that I can start taking care of the bedding, hospital bag and other stuff.

The shop assistant said we could use the cot bed the first few months, and section it so that the baby would sleep in just a small partition and that it's a great idea and totally safe in terms of air ventilation etc. BUT, another shop assistant (in the same shop) didn't agree at all  . She said that it's a mad idea to let a small newborn sleep in a cot bed as it's like a huge double bed for them and said we should consider a moses basket or a small crib or travel cot.

The baby's room is a really small one, and I'm not really keen on buying stuff which will only be used for a couple of months and then end up in our boxroom indefinately ! Even if we get cash gifts or vouchers from close family, I'd rather get other things to be honest. Is it such a bad idea to start using the cot bed from the very beginning and maybe section it in such a way that the baby would not feel lost in it? Or should we just go ahead and get something smaller in size?

thanks xxxx

you can get cot sectioners on ebay and i think boots do them but tbh they are about the same price as a moses basket anyway,
i had a moses basket for thomas and in the day he slept on the sofa or in his carycot from the pram on the sofa,
its ulimatly up to you weather you put your baby in a cot right away aslong as its at the feet to foot possistion i dont see the problem if your happy with it
xx

Nathan was in his cot from his second night home. He didn't like his moses so had to go in his cot. They're fine to use from birth aslong as you put them in the feet to foot position :)

If you do want something small though I'd go for a crib because they last until around 6months. Kieran had a moses basket but outgrew it pretty quick and he's in a crib now and he still has plenty of room left in it :)

A smal crib by the bed. He moved into his cotbed (in his own room) at 7 months, and even then he looked tiny in it! :)

moses basket next to the bed then into his cot in our room about 3/4 months and he's now just gone into his own room :D

Amber was in a moses basket next to our bed until she was 5 months old, then she went into her cot in her own bedroom, and into a bed when she was 18 months old!
I think putting the baby in a cot from the offset is OK as long as you are comfortable with it!

Our Lo slept in a Moses basket for about 6 weeks or so (I can't actually remember  ) then went into a cotbed in our room. It depends on the baby really, Ella liked to stretch in her sleep and therefore needed the space of the cotbed.

As long as you have the space in your room fro a cotbed then you should be fine, if not it may be better to get a crib as they should really be in with you for 6 months.

Also, I found it really useful to be able to rock the moses basket in the first few weeks as it helped to settle her, could you borrow a basket or crib from anyone?

In our bed. We've had the whole lot - moses basket, crib and now a cot bed - but co-sleeping has felt the right thing for us and we are still doing it. I love being woken up by strokes/kicks by LO. What a waste of money with all the other stuff :rotfl:

It's not clear from your post whether the baby will be in your room for the first few months or not. All mine slept in moses baskets or cribs next to my bed for at least 12 weeks. Easier for night feeds and certainly better for peace of mind. I couldn't bear to have them apart from me.

It's fine to buy a secondhand moses basket - you can normally get them very cheap and in nearly new condition as they tend to only be used for a few weeks. I found mine great as they can be moved around the house. I'd bring baby downstairs when I got up, so they could sleep in the living room then would take them up to bed again at night without having to disturb them.

I guess it all depends how you intend to approach looking after your baby. My OH's cousin used to have a set schedule for naps and feeds etc and baby was only allowed to sleep upstairs. I always favoured a more flexible, baby-led approach.

I don't see any problem with baby going straight in the cot. Bear in mind, babies are all different. My oldest hated open spaces and had to be swaddled to go to sleep, but my younger 2 loved being able to spread out.

Once we got the nursery sorted we then went a got a crib to put in our room, he has now gone in the cotbed in the nursery.
I managed to get a moses basket from freecycle and we have this at the grandparents.
Looking at it now i was glad we got the crib as i dont think i could have put him straight in the nursery but everyone is different and its down to personal choice.

At the minute she's in a moses basket next to my side of the bed but she has had a few daytime naps in her cot and I put her in there a lot just so she can get used to it.

Once she's too big for the basket and sleeping through the night she'll be moving to her own room in her cot

in a moses basket in our room for the first 2 weeks, then in her moses basket in her cot in her own room until about 16 weeks when she moved out of the moses basket

Theo went straight in to a cot bed. and he slept fine, we got a sleep positioner for him that he slept in between, so the cot bed didnt seem to big to him.
we didnt bother with a moses basket, Theo was a big baby, and im sure he would have out grown it very quickly. i dont see the point in spending the extra money.
