Stop putting everything in their mouths? Just curious really, I noticed that my 2 year old niece hasn't put things in her mouth for a long time, so I assume it's some time between the ages of 1 and 2

I hope so! My son (19 months) still puts almost everything in his mouth!!! I'm sure my daughter stopped doing that earlier...

I've tried Googling but there doesn't seem to be anything on it - I could be looking in the wrong places though. I know kids develop at their own pace but it would be nice to have a benchmark too.

My son did it until a few months before he turned 2, everything went in his mouth. I think they just grow out of it x

when they are ready really....I am a childminder so experience a lot of children at different ages....I have had 2 children grow up with me and still put things in their mouths around 3 years old, one is 5 soon and still does when he's not thinking or tired.

Never! My son is two and still does it. I'm 35 years old and still mindlessly chew on pens etc so I know where he gets it from!

Ha ha littlemonkey!

Thanks ladies, I know it'll ease/stop at some point and I don't even care that he does it, it's just interesting to know when roughly he'll grow out of it y'know?

They don't stop, don't ever rely on them stopping just because insight they won't.. As a kid I used to suck on them can lids and salty shells of pistachio's.. Anything solid(non food, but also some foods/not all) like that is a choking hazard regardless if a kid is 1 or 2 or 8-18.. I'm glad I'm still here to warn others about it because I nearly died at 8 years old, choking on the shell of a pistachio which was dismissed by my doctor straight after it made it's way into my windpipe slowly killing me resulting in a 6 day stay (3 ICU) in hospital...

My son generally doesn't put things in his mouth but when he gets hold of a coin or something of interest on the rare occasion I still see him trying to have a little nibble of it..

No, I'd never rely on him stopping 100% - after all, our tongue is the most sensitive part of the body! What I mean is as soon as you give him something, a book, a toy, pajamas (!), it all immediately goes in his mouth. So I'm just wondering when do the hands take over as the predominant 'feelers', if you will

Is it not pre-dominant during teething? My son is a year older now and he's nearly finished, it's something that's just more obvious during those phases.. Especially the entire ripping teats of bottles and dummies, though he doesn't do that now.. I have caught him having a nibble on some bits now he's having his last molars come through.. I did give this a thought the other day that say now he's going nursery he isn't putting all the toys and books in his mouth.. Maybe about 18 month he already stopped doing that and now I've spotted him doing it with his last teeth..

For Riley it's constant, teething or no. I have noticed that he's doing it slightly less - he'll turn things over in his hands before shoving it in his mouth as opposed to the other way round, which is what he's done previously but everything still goes in the mouth. I don't know whether it's food related - he would eat all day without stopping if he could! - or whether it's just a Riley thing that he'll always do but will reduce over time.

we rarely have anything in the mouth, hes 16 months. ive always told him no for everything aside teether and he seems to have picked it up - he just brnigs it to me

i had a lovely pile of bark from the garden and some leafs yesterday lol
