Hi ladies.
I'm curious to when your milk came in? Did it come in before baby, during labor, after birth? I'm a ftm and 33 weeks now so just wondering as I don't won't to be out and about and start leaking.

I have been leaking since 24 weeks. I think it varies X

Wow really. It makes me nervous that my milk hasn't shown any signs of coming in. I have had sore breast and nipple on and off throughout the whole pregnancy. I really hope my milk comes in as I really want to BF.

My milk came in properly 3 days post partum. I never leaked in pregnancy

I've breastfed my son till he was 10 months and 4 months in with my daughter and never leaked during pregnancy. My milk can in day 5 and day 3 pp.

I asked my midwife and it also says in the baby books that you MAY leak during pregnancy but not always. It doesn't mean anything. My sister and friend are both pregnant ( all Of us first time mums) and one is 26 weeks pregnant and no leaking and one is 29 and leaking. As I said it varies x

You can leak but generally ita a couple days after bubs is born
Its kicked off by the hormones from delivering your placenta
So until the milk comes in they love off of the colostrum x

I usually leak colostrum from about mid pregnancy but my milk didn't come in until day 3 after having Blake. :)

This is probably a really stupid question from a ftm but if your milk doesnt come in till a few days after birth how do u feed baby in the first few days? How much colostrum do u get and is it enough to satisfy baby? X

Thry only eat a marble sized amount when just born and its so rich and full of goodness its enough to see them through
Sometimes though as youd expect it might not be enough and they do drop a bit below their birth weight but it quickly goes back up again
My concern is how do you know theyre even getting much colostrum lol

As a veteran breastfeeder, believe me when I say that you have to trust your body. You don't know how much they're getting, but the baby will soon let you know if they're still hungry! Your body and the baby will take care of the quantities, it's not something mum needs to worry about. Just feed on demand and you'll be fine.

On day 2 the baby will feed almost constantly. It's not because they're starving or not getting enough, it's their way of telling your body to produce milk. Stay strong because that day can be hard. But honestly, my best advice is trust in your body. It knows what it's doing :)

Completely agree and also cluster feeding out night is perfectly normally especially in the first few weeks.

I leaked from around 16 weeks pregnant! My actual milk came in around 3-4 days after having Jessica. Agree with MrsMeany and Nutsyputs, my girl fed every 20-30 mins on day 2 and cluster fed a lot at night when we got home from hospital.x

When I speak to people who have stopped breastfeeding because "their supply failed", they nearly always go on to describe cluster feeding. I remember resenting those evenings of being stuck in my nursing chair, plugged in to baby, but he always slept so much better than babies I knew who didn't cluster. It feels like hard work but it usually means more sleep!

I had genuinely never heard of cluster feeding until now. Very good to know because I know I would panic thinking baby wanted fed constantly because I was doing something wrong x

Theyre just regulating the body to know how much it needs to make x

I don't think it's discussed enough at antenatal classes to be honest, perhaps they're worried it will scare women off trying! I'd never heard of it until I was doing it. Luckily, I had a friend who was 5 weeks ahead of me.

It doesn't last forever though :) Eventually a feed will be so quick that you won't be giving it a second thought. I miss it! Hope this baby will feed

I'm producing colostrum already at just 13 weeks but my milk didn't come in properly until 3 days pp with my first born and 5 days pp with my second. Prior to that it was just tiny droplets of colostrum occassionally.

Apparently whether or not you leak depends on how free flowing your nipple valves are (sorry I can't remember the correct terminology, lol).
