Miss Evie has been on Cow&Gate up until this week when I had to give her SMA White because the shop had run out of the usualy stuff. Since then, her poos have been really hard and she's been in terrible pain trying to poo :( It actually makes me a bit weepy to see her in so much pain!

The poos are solid, could it be the formula or is she dehydrated? I'm going to try her on water inbetween feeds to see if that helps, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

perhaps the change of milk has made her constipated, poor evie. not sure what would be the best thing to do, but wanted to give you

isnt SMA white a hungry baby milk? shes probably consitpated, give her some cooled boiled water no more than an oz at a time and i'd change back to the cow and gate, dont worry about wasting the sma white you can always introduce it a bottle at a time. Switching formula usually causes them to get bunged up or the opposite can happen.

Also gently massage her tummy in a circular clockwork motion starting at her tummy button moving outwards...this is the direction that the bowel travels...then expect a bum explosion and probably a few runny nappies afterwards

Isla was like it and the above worked...also let them push their feet against your hands when they're straining, it helps them push it out...lol...Isla was biting down on the dummy too :rotfl:

Ditto to this. Our HV warned us against it for this very reason and my cousin had problems with SMA white and constipation too when giving it to her DD.

Water should help

I use SMA White and never had any problems. It IS hungrier baby milk though.

To ease constipation just give cooled boiled water and, my HV recommened, ading a tiny bit of orange juice.

The midwife said to me a tiny bit of brown sugar in with water helps. She did say to me only to do that though if she hadn't pooed for a few days.

Poor eveie, only advice dannii is to get her back on cow and gate asap and she should be fine within a couple of days. I was warned off sma when my babies were youngsters

I had the opposite problem! I changed from SMA gold to cow and gate and it gave her the most horrendous runs and explosive nappies! Hungry baby milks can def cause constipation though so I would def say it is that.

Sounds like the milk could be causing it - I changed Finlay's milk and he was a bit over excited in the poo department for a few days

Hope Evie feels better soon.

Ditto the others. Hungry baby milk can cause problems like this. I'd stop with the SMA white asap and go back to non hungry baby milk.

If she is formula fed she should be having water anyways I thought, so keep offering it. It can help.

sparky has given some good advice about massage and pushing against your hands. Can really help.

Hope she improves when back on her regular formula.

Not sure where you heard this? Formula fed babies shouldn't really have water routinely unless they are constipated (as above) or if the weather is very hot and they're at risk of becoming dehydrated. Water just fills them up without the calories or nutrition so isn't recommended unless in the situations above.

Danni, It might not be a bad idea to phone NHS 24 just for some guidance. Tell them what you told us and that she is in pain. Everyones experience of hungry baby milk is different, Jessica had no problems with it and pooed like clockwork. (god, dont ask me about her on fresh orange, ewwwwww)

They might be able to tell you about something you can buy for the constipation.

Good luck

I thought the same as you Lorna. Finlay gets water offered at lunchtime and dinner time but he's on solids now so it helps
