I'm not sure when to do this... he seems happy enough with the sides up. He hasn't tried to climb out or anything. Jacob is 19 months old now! In was thinking about putting a gate up on his bedroom door and then turning his cot into the bed... will he fall out? if he gets out during the night will he know to get back in to sleep or just fall asleep on the floor?

You could get a side rail to stop him from falling out of bed once you convert the cot into a cotbed.

We're about to move Isaac into a bed once his new bed arrives as we need the cotbed for his brother/sister.

I personally didn't remove the sides from my son's cotbed till about 4 months ago so he was roughly2 1/2 years old. He was perfectly happy in it as it was and never even attempted to climb out of it, but we figured it was time. One, because we are having another baby so one transition at a time is enough! And two, because we are potty training him now, so if he is napping during the day, or even at night and needs to toilet then he can get out on his own and use the potty. We've never had any problems with him since we did it, he still sleeps just as well, although now he comes into our room in the morning when he wakes up rather than me going to fetch him from his cot.

i took brays off at 18 months as he was climbing out and nearly knocked himself out
if he is happy if leave them on hun so much easier lol
