Last night Jacob managed to wriggle off the sensor pad and I woke up at 5am to see the green light flashing red! We had not heard the alarm go off. It was 5am aswel and Jacob always wake's before 4am for a feed.

I shot out of bed so get to him, slipped on the laminate flooring and went flying. I hit the floor landing on my left arm :? The pain was instant, I thought i'd broke it!

Hubby woke up with me crying in pain, I shouted the alarm has gone off, he jumped out of bed and ran straight to Jacob and thankfully he was fine, still fast asleep!

Hubby's parents came round to look after Jacob and we headed off to A&E. Luckily, I haven't broke anything but have badly pulled one of the muscles in the top of my arm.

The moment I woke up and realised the alarm had gone off was one of the worst moments in my life. The panic and fear I felt was awful. Hubby and I have questioned if the monitor causes more anxiety rather than peace of mind.

Just wanted to warn other parents that babies can wriggle off the sensor mat even at 8 weeks old! I'm not sure what I will do tonight. Use the alarm or not?? We'll see.

I figured the Jacob had slept so well last night because he had his injections yesterday, was given Calpol before bed and had a bottle of his hungry baby milk for his last feed. His grandparents have taken him for the day so I can get some rest after my trauma!

hope your arm is ok

which monitor are you using?

we have the babysense one which has two pads and I love it - no false alarms, and fires a little warning sound before the very loud alarm goes off (which is ver useful as OH keeps forgetting to turn it off when he gets the baby up in the morning while I snooze!)

I'm sorry to hear about your very traumatic experience. i hope you are feeling better today.

We have a sensor pad, we aren't using it yet but when we do I can see this sort of thing happening. When we do transfer Imogen to her own room and cot (which is quite big) we will keep Imogen in a moses basket with the sensor pad under that for as long as possible. It does work under that so there is no chance of her rolling off it. But maybe by the time she will sleep just in the cot we may feel better and more comfortable with her in there and not need the sensor mat.

take it easy..

Thanks for your replies :)

Smile... we have the Tommee Tippee monitor.

Beatlesfan.... Jacob was in his cot in his moses basket up until last week and we didn't have any problems before then. We decided to put him in his cot as he is a big baby and didn't have much space left in his moses basket. I still don't know what to do tonight :? It was very scary!

We used the Tommee Tippee movement monitor for a few weeks then stoped using it.

Adam has really bad reflux, so we had to keep lifting him from his moses basket and kept forgeting to switch it off. It is so annoying hearing it when you are half way down the stairs and you have to run back up with baby in your arms, so not to wake your OH.

I woke once and noticed that the light showed the alarm had went off, but we never heard anything. It got me confussed and worried. In the end we stoped using it as it was causing more stress than not using it.

I hope your arm is better. Let us know how you feel about using the monitor after you read the responses to your post. xxx

This has happened to us a couple of times...the first time we ended up in A&E cos I was convinced that there was something wrong with her, thankfully she was totally fine and had just gone into a really deep sleep which can affect the sensor monitor.

It's also gone off when she's rolled off the pad too but we're a lot more relaxed about it now if it goes off.

OH and I had the discussion about whether the monitor created more worry with the alarm going off but we decided that we'd rather have a few false alarms than not have the monitor on at all

i know what you mean i think if you use the sensor pad in a cot its easy to have a false alarm as baby can roll of the mat . I use it in the crib at the moment and have tested all areas of the matress to make sure it works, it is so sensitive so there is no way baby can roll off. I have the Tommee Tippee suresound monitor and sensor pad.
I must say i do feel pad had had saved my babys life yesterday as he was crying a little in his crib and the alarm went off so my partner ran up to him and he was throffing at the mouth and went grey and stopped breathing !! so my partner picked him up and got him breathing again . I do think that without the monitor we would never of known that he stopped breathing . xx

So so sorry to hear about your ordeal Full of hope!   I once switched the end to which Isaac slept and forgot to move the sensor pad and it went off, never ran as fast in my life, was my fault though not the alarm. I really hope you arm's better soon, and glad baby is fine, they can be wriggly from birth, its a good point to make Mummy's aware of

We use the Tommee Tippee Reassurance 8 monitor but have never had any false alarms with it :)

Thanks for your responces ladies :D

Well, last night we decided to use the sensor pad and alarm. Like Pilkers has said... i'd rather have a false alarm than not use the monitor at all. We turned the sensor pad around in the cot and put it width ways instead on lengthways then if Jacob does wriggle to the side of his cot it should still pick him up.

I didn't sleep too well last night, I kept looking at the sensor light and listening out for him. The whole thing has got me on edge! Anyway, Jacob slept from 7pm, hubby got him up for a dream feed at 10.30pm and then he slept through until 7am :D Which is great!

I can hardly move today, my arm is really hurting and my whole body aches so a quiet day at home for us!

Thanks again for your replies, it helps to 'talk' about things with other people who understand

Gosh that must have scared the life out of you both & I'm glad you're arms ok. Thats why it was mine and OH's personal choice not to get a monitor because I'm such a worrier anyway it wouldn't have been ideal for us. I'm glad all is ok though!

we have the angelcare one this has happened to us a few times and i absolutly kacked myself, i often find myself lying there waiting for it to do it again, its the most sickening feeling ever the noise haunts me so much i hate the sound of it

We have an Angel care monitor and have never had a false alarm - although pleanty running back upstairs because we have forgotten to switch it off! Even though she moves off where the mat is, the movement through the matress is enough. I have noticed though that when she was in the Moses basket, it would pick up my heartbeat/movements if I stood very close, so i had to keep it well away from our bed for it to only pick up her movements. Main problem is that it doesn't work in the travel cot as it doesn't have a firm base. Wouldn't be without it though.
