Warning re tt perfect prep

This is worrying. I have purchased one but don't want to use it now x

Sorry lisey that's frustrating I know! Not wanting to start a debate on pf but I was told not to use one, Personal choice of course but just wanted to share the vid as that's pretty grim! I'd imagine it's not the case with all machines and she's not clarified if she's cleaning correctly, but TT are investigating it seems xx

We need to check ours. We use the right branded filters though and do the cleaning cycle etc. I know some people don't use the official filters if that makes a difference. Hoping ours is ok! Xx

No, I appreciate you putting it on. I would rather know. I have emailed mothercare to see if I can return. Once I show that to my OH, I know he won't want to use it either. I am sure there are plenty that are just fine but I won't get that out of my head now x

Yeah sure yours is fine in all likelihood! I'd wager it's only a relative handful affected but always better to check these things I guess xx

We seen this on watch dog. We hadn't used ours yet but it alarmed me. They are investigating but it seems there are some whose are much worse and others not affected not sure why or what. Initially I thought water differences.. but who knows.

We basically clean ours use cool boiled water to fill it change and use official filter and I've just had the idea of popping a Miltown sterile tab in when I do my regular cycle cleaning.

We have had no issues so far but I have only used a couple month and not needed to replace the filter.

I hope no one's lo suffers due to this some of them do look awful - they already have had enough mould hassle with the sippy cups.

xxxx

Glad someone posted this! The prep machine is vile it's not just mold in the tubes the water shot isn't hot either it's warm which iisnt enough to kill the bacteria for a baby's formula xxx

Mothercare have agreed to let me return it thankfully xx

I'll just add my friend checked her pipes and they where moldy she swears she always ran the cleaning thing and used their filters etc. My friend who is a midwife assistant says they had a course warning them about the tts and they don't recommend using them due to the temperature thing.

Yeah the NHS do not recommend them. A study has shown that the small amount of water from the hot shot does not kill 100% of the bacteria in the formula. Also I don't think TT ever agreed to release the results of their development/testing research. Shame as I'd totally have had one of these for the convenience! x

Snap I was hoping they where good so I could get one. But looks like I'll be waiting to see if they fix the issues first before shelling out.

They claim they're safe so don't think that aspect of it will change x

Just to offer an alternate view, I've used mine now for 5 months no problems. I opened the back of mine after hearing about the problems but thankfully no mould. I will continue to use going forwards. Xxx

Yeah moomin it seems like there's plenty with no issue. Think this is why TT are so keen to view the ones with the mold to see if there's batches with defects etc, or alternatively if there's a misunderstanding on how to clean them effectively x

Ill probably give them a miss then, i know some are fine and some are not but i wouldnt want to risk it with my luck. im sure ill cope ive done it old school twice before with no issues.

Although majority of formulas are made with boiling or near boiled water. My son is on a medical prescription formula with pro biotics which actually isn't made up with boiled water - because the boiling temp would kill of essential ingredients for him and his allergies. So the machine has been great for us as we can add both shots then mix his milk rather than having him screaming whilst I try cool the boiled water. As mentioned we fill ours with only cooled boiled water so really no different than putting an oz from the kettle and topping up as many do with flasks etc during the night.

May I also point out that using any formula carries risk in itself regardless of boiling. There was a case recently were an infant died due to contaminated formula. Rare care ofcourse but there are risks to formula feedIng as well as there is when using a machine that only doesn't sterilise a small part of formula. I believe it led the whole batch to be recalled. So it could have been a bigger problem. Thankfully this will now be closely monitored considerIng a child's health is on the line - they can't be seen to be investigating and still selling products which cause harm.

Thankfully TT have issues a reassurance and ways to keep your machine in good condition which included running a cycle with sterile solution to remove any debris from the tube so I assume if we continue to do this then we will be fine.

Fingers crossed for everyone using them :)

For anyone who didn't see the findings posted by TT...

We’d like to thank all parents for their patience, whilst we carried out our investigations into concerns about some Perfect Prep machines. We’re pleased to advise that we now have an update for you, which includes some additional ways to clean your machine.

After extensive discussions with the filter manufacturer, we remain 100% confident that it is impossible for bacteria to enter the pipework through the Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep filter.

We are aware - because you’ve told us - that some affected machines have at some point been used with a non-Tommee Tippee filter. Other brands do not contain the ultra-filtration antibacterial filter needed to remove bacteria, which could lead to bacteria and visible (but harmless) carbon deposits forming in the pipes. Even if a non Perfect Prep filter is used only once, it can allow bacteria into the system.

However, we do know that some mums who say that they have only ever used the Tommee Tippee filter, are still seeing build-up.

If this is the case, it is possible that bacteria has entered the pipes through accidental cross-contamination. It’s easy for this to happen, but, don’t worry, this can be remedied with the cleaning cycle described below, and by taking some simple additional preventative every-day steps when changing the filter and cleaning your machine.

Either way, if you are concerned about build up in your machine for any reason, you can clean the machine and remove the build-up by running the following cleaning instructions. Run a first cleaning cycle with a sterilising solution such as Milton or food grade white vinegar. Then run a second cleaning cycle with water as per the normal recommended cleaning cycle instructions. Our tests have shown that doing this will remove any build-up or carbon deposits. You can then continue to use your machine as normal with confidence.

However, it is very important that your everyday routine includes simple hygiene steps such as keeping formula away from the hopper and only ever holding the top of the filter. A full update of instructions and support on cleaning the machine and handling the filter will be available at www.tommeetippee.co.uk/perfectprepcleaning.

We know the machine is a much-loved part of many parent’s feeding routine. We can reassure everyone that we remain completely confident that the Perfect Prep delivers a safe and convenient feed for your baby.

Maybe they should just start putting big warnings on children's and baby's feeding products that they need to be regularly checked and cleaned on how to that that's included in the manual and that there is always a risk of debris build up or mold growth when there's water involved..
Unless it's thoroughly dried after every use.. same goes for anything whether it's a spout cup or a straw cup.. heck even my washing machine comes across these issues and that thing runs every single day even with regular boiling washes!
