not sure where the research is from yet, or why it only seem to apply to the uk... will look deeper when I get chance...

I think I am going to stick with my plans though, Toby isn't ready for weaning

I caught the middle of the report on TV, but feeding on demend was also questioned :wall2:can't see that mentioned on the link so that will have confused mums even more :(

I saw it on the news this morning, there saying that babys who are exclusively breastfed for 6 months may lack important nutrients. i was going to breastfeed exclusively till 6 months but i've been advised to start weaning at 4 months due to severe Reflux. its very confusing x

Interesting, my OH was bf until he was 13 months, he also has a stomach condition where he can't digest long chain fats (cheese, milk, yogurt etc). His mother was told that because he was a sicky baby they should avoid weaning!!!

I'm breastfeeding and will be introducing baby rice next month when she is 4 months. I can't wait to give her food.

I'll be sticking to breastfeeding for as long as I can, at the end of the day it's what's made for baby naturally so it can't be that lacking! It's probably dependent on the mother's diet anyway so I figure if I'm getting everything I should be to be healthy then it will make good milk for Lizzie.

i heard this on the news aswell. i breastfed my daughter till she was a year and weaned her at 6 months, im going to be doing the same with Colbi aswell, hes started waking in the night but its not going to make me wean him now, because other then waking in the night hes a very contented baby! x

yes just seen this too and had a looka t some of the research. Seems the research for making the decision in 2003 was quite limited anyway. Been trying to hold off weaning Owen but feel he is ready so maybe another week or 2 and then start on baby rice. It is a bit confusing!!!

Way to confuse everyone! Lmao! This is one of the only things that bugs me about having children-the guidelines change constantly! It's worse too because obviously mothers want what's best for their baby (I bottle feed but don't think that's a bad thing) and things like this makes parents worry about and question what they're doing! Every baby is different! I think 'research' into this stuff is difficult to do as you can't have exactly the same conditions in order to test the theory, making it unreliable. I say do what you personally feel is best.

in my opinion, if we didnt have the option of anything else, we would breastfeed. we would then recognise when our child isnt getting enough and needs food. but what i think they are forgetting is the mothers diet has to be good to get the appropriate nutrients to the child, and what we wean them onto isnt exactly nutritious ie baby rice! not an awful lot of goodness in that. they really only get goodness (this is all from when i studied to become a nutritionist) from RAW ingredients as they arent synthetic like some jars and those heinz mix with water powder things. thats not real food in my opinion, they need a banana or something easy at first to get correct nutrients! thats all completely based on what ive learned over the years and the healthiest people i know are on a raw diet, known as the caveman diet. they didnt all die of cancer im sure! x

I think this is going to confuse a hell of a lot of new mums and pregnant women.

We have to remember that these are only guidelines, they arent set it stone, you have to use your instinct as a mother and choose whats right for your baby, these guidelines are all good and well, but no 2 babys are the same, so what may apply to one, may not apply to another.

i started weaning all around 4 months and my last at 5 months

It's confused me and made me wonder if I'm doing the best for my son that's for sure, and that is someone who works with government guidelines...

Well I started Ross weaning at about 15 weeks, if I hadn't we'd have had a very underweight little soldier! Guidelines are that, just guidelines. We seem to break all the rules though, Ross only had what breastmilk I could express, sleeps on his tummy, was weaned early, what next? It's bad enough being a new mum and trying to do everything right for your baby with everyone's different opinions about what to do and not to do. Well I'm fed up with it. I'll hear them and make my own judgement. Rant over.

yeah i agree megsmeadow! im fed up of being told different things by everyone and going to different docs and getting different adivce to my hv. im gonna do exactly what j wants me to do and that be that! x

I just saw this on the news. The woman did say that every baby was different and grew at different rates and what was right for one wasn't right for another, and I think most mums can tell when their babies are ready. I get the impression that most mums wean before 6 months anyway and can tell that their babies are ready for it. I tried oscar with different things for the last few weeks but He's not interested in the slightest so boob it is. Oh well....

yeah we trie J onsome stuff and he wasn't intereested so well tik to milk! x

Personally I feel that the best thing to do is whatever your instinct as a
Mother tells you! I dont really listen to government guidelines and I will do whatever I think is best not what someonen else tells me! You will know if your child is ready for food
