views on sunbed use during pregnancy!!

Just read this on the Bounty website under 'week 16'....

"Try to limit your use of saunas and tanning beds as it has been reported that an increase in the mother’s temperature can have an affect on developing babies."

I dont see them saying try to limit your alcohol intake, or cigarette smoking, or bunjee jumping enjoyment... if it was a no no, they would be only too quick to say it. They arent advising to stop, they are advising to limit your use, and even then they are only advising it at 16 weeks, and only because of the overheating aspect

I dunno who you're trying to convince lol...

Wss^

In dermatology we had light treatment, which was basically s walk in Sun bed. The difference was you could control the strength of the UV and which type of UV Ray to use ie A or B. This was safer than a Sun bed, but was by no means safe iykwim. It could only be used for a certain time which had to be built up, and only for so long. So once you'd had so much exposure, you couldn't use it anymore without a consultant review and signing a disclaimer. The scatty thing is people go way over this limit just using commercial beds.

So even when you have control of it, it's not 'safe' x

I have psoriasis pretty bad, and the only thing that keeps it under control is UV treatment, this type in the hospital clears it completely, but i have to really fight to get a course each time because of the health risk even when controlled.
However, because of this, i have kept it under control using tanning beds, which is less than ideal, but when a condition affects your life nd confidence as much as mine does, you weigh up the risks and benefits and do what you feel you have to.

But the point i wanted to make was that despite the fact that i have good reason to want to use a tanning bed, i stopped the very second i got pregnant, i am desperate to get on one because i am now suffering terribly. Its not just unsightly either, it is painful and it bleeds. And on top of stretch marks , water retention and all the other pregnancy joys i feel like a troll!
But i just think its really sad that some ladies cannot just step away from the sunbed for a few months because they want a tan, yet i can muster the self control to stay off one!
Everyone takes their own risks, and yes they are entitled to make their own decisions, but laying on a tanning bed pretty obviously raises your body temp and you are probably cooking your baby. I am amazed hat any tanning shop owner would let a pregnant lady in anyway, that is really irresponsible in itself.

Ouch! My friends husband has psoriasis and I know from him how painful it is :hugs:
Like you say, you can stay away even with all the pain you are in! I really hope you don't get too much pain hun x

Im certainly not the kind of person who needs to convince themselves of anything trust me, as an award winning 27 year old MD running a company and a dozen staff, I have long since listened to the advice and chosen whether or not I want to use it or disregard it. There are many things that people wouldn't do in pregnancy that I don't personally consider to be an issue, I have my own interpretation of what is safe and what isnt safe and that view rarely corresponds with professional guidelines. If I listened to half of what 'experts' told me, I wouldnt half got so much as half way to where I am today.

I was simply offering links/evidence/thins to consider to anybody who might want to consider BOTH sides of the debate, although clearly this isnt a debate because there is only one point of view considered acceptable.

Some of the things people are saying is just utterly ridiculous - cooking your baby by being in the sun? Well God help all those poor pregnant people who live in tropical climates! Their babies must be begging to get out!

And like someone else has mentioned above, I also use a sunbed for skin problems rather than for tanning purposes - not that it is really relevant.

Isn't it? Yawn zzzzzz

Ok Nikki
You crack on then love, good luck to you. You continue to use the sunbeds if that's what you want to do but there's really no need to keep telling us how "safe" they are when all of the other ladies have said that they will wait until after baby is born.

Oh and FYI, just a guess, but I'm thinking that ladies who live in hot countries may be acclimatised and usually don't stay out in the height of the sun? Just a thought :wall:

Light treatment for health issues (it's not referred to as a Sun bed in these circumstances) is not the same.

Your job is not relevant however.

Can't believe this thread is still going in its a proven fact that sunbeds have risks so if u choose to use one when your not pregnant fair enough , however why risk your unborn child's health . Jesus Christ is being pale so bad .

Some studies show that there may be a link between increased UV rays and a folic acid deficiency. This is because UV rays can break down folic acid.
Folic acid is very important in the development of the baby's neural system (brain and spinal cord), which is formed during weeks 1-13 of pregnancy- this is from NHS website

I have been following this thread with interest think people's points have have now been overridden by infantile bullying. It does seem only one opinion is acceptable and now any comments made by Nikki are met with disdain and intolerance.

Be balanced in life, live and let live. If you don't like something, don't do it, but judging and picking on someone else who doesn't share your views is blinkered and in the era we live in, unacceptable.

I would hope that this trait is not something you wil all in future teach to your children, because that in itself isnt healthy and being judgemental does not make a well balanced, healthy person.

I know my thoughts may cause some controversy, and I expect a barrage of abuse for showing some defence of Nikki, but I do feel it needs to be said.

Please note, I'm not even discussing the original question raised as I feel this has all got quite personal now. When the original question was asked people should be allowed to answer honestly without receiving a barrage of abuse and accusations of bad parenting. That is the point of an open forum.

No one is being bullied at all , just because we don't agree with Nikkis views this does not mean we are bullying her .

We are all allowed are own opinions .

I agree.
People who have disagreed with Nikki have done so in a polite manner, giving real valid reasons (and links to articles where necessary).

I think the majority agree sunbeds aren't necessary when pregnant. So why bother? Why risk it?

If there's a "risk to baby", dont do it. Simple? I colour my hair because there is no known risk. I have spray tans and use fake tan because there is no know risk. But sunbeds carry a risk. Overheating baby is one of the worst things you can do, so we choose to avoid it because we want to avoid risks to our babies, yes? If there was no known risk I'd jump under one, but the fact it raises ur core temperature so high, it's dangerous.

Think this is why it's become a little "heated" (excuse the pun), because there is a definite risk to baby, hence why it's so hard to comprehend doing it anyway? You don't need to be MD to work that out.

No one is being bullied, to even throw that word out there is ridiculous.

Lauralou- love the pun ;) x

Not one person has bullied another. So whatever this 'trait' your talking about has baffled me.

Personally, i think it would be unhealthy to risk your unborn child's life before you can teach them any trait anyway.

I would pass the '99s round to chill everyone out...but we're not allowed those either... :-P

Although I made one at home yesterday and it was delicious, who needs Mr Whippy? :-)

Can i just say--- im judgmental! Im honestly 100% judgemental- i watch Jeremy Kyle and read those life magazines just so i can judge people like 'she slept with 100 blokes slutty slut' i dont see why the word is thrown around as an insult all the time when its human nature. If i saw a mum shooting up pregnant i would think 'stupid *****' the list goes on, and there are lots like me, a whole industry of reality tv and talk shows are made for judgemental people lol x
