views on sunbed use during pregnancy!!

Ok, do I am very anti Sun beds and I'll tell you for why.

When I worked on dermatology, we would have biopsy clinics in theatre, where people with lesions, moles etc would come in and have them excised etc. Then there would be the plastic surgeons who would come in for the follow up clinics, when patients who had already had surgeries to remove various types of skin cancers would come back for a review.

I saw people from the start to the finish off their journey and let me tell you not once did any of them day I wish they were more tanned. Vanity was no longer an issue after surgery, skin grafts, scarring, therapy etc.

As for those who live in foreign climes, there skin is suited to that. Ours is not. In fact, Morecambe has a high rate of skin cancers caused by Sun damage and its hardly the Costa del sol!

The large majority of skin cancers we saw were due to Sun damage and Sun bed use. And factor 15 is useful as a chocolate fire guard.

Sun beds are so harmful due to the UV waves. They aren't controlled and can cause severe damage. Not only that, but they will make skin age quicker too. They are not just light bulbs, they are concentrated UV rays.

Sun beds are dangerous, fact. You would never put a baby on one, so why do it during pregnancy?

It's in case they don't clean the machines properly as icecream not chilled enough to kill listeria. . Same reason you can't have a McFlurry...

And when I say can't I mean it's advised by the NHS not to.

I wouldn't use a sunbed when pregnant and I wouldn't use one when not pregnant either. I am extremely fair and I burn ridiculously easily, I hate lying in the sun for hours too as I get too hot and I get stroppy. I just don't like it lol. I went to Rhodes in October last year and it was 30 degrees every day, I got seriously bad burns despite using suntan lotion and was very worried about it when the burn on my leg took a long time to fade. I just don't find it worth the risk be it normal sun or sunbeds x

Oh I didn't know about the mcflurrys and ice cream from vans!!

I only just saw this thread title and am a bit shocked, are there really people who would use a sunbed while pregnant? sun beds and tanning in general really isn't my thing as I have very fair skin and resemble a lobster if I go out even while wearing factor 50!

sunbeds are seriously carcinogenic so surely it's no better than smoking while pregnant?

I honestly cant understand why a person cant go with out a tan for 9 months but thats just me I dont use a sun bed or fake tan never have I look after my apprance dont get me wrong but to me I dont understand why someone would possibly risk (proven or not) their babies health for vanity???
I wouldnt have even thought about using a sunbed whilst pregnacy I would have though it was common sence not to, its like midwives dont say dont go bungee jumping when pregnant its common sence x

I dont think choosing to not do them makes for a stressed unhappy mum its not like i was sat stressing because i didnt drink (for example) i just thought 'cant do that' and went on with life. x

I'm not saying people get stressed about not doing something. I am saying that there is so much stuff put out there now, you could be wrapping yourself in cotton wool and staying in the house for 9 months worrying about things you do hurting the baby - that is not healthy. And some people do feel like that.

No i dont think wrapping yourself in cotton wool is good but some things are just obviously not worth the risk, to me if someone has an icecream then fine if they want to take the risk but some are just plain stupid, like smoking taking drugs etc x

I used sunbeds a lot before I was pregnant, at least once a week for last 10 years. I have not been on one since I fell pregnant, I just prefered not to. I probably wont go on one again as my skin has felt so much nicer and fake tan seems to have dont the same job for me for last 25 weeks :)

why do something that MAY harm your baby? I think its totally irresponsible and SELFISH!!

especially as its for vanity reasons.

I know there is a long list of "donts" when pregnant. But for christ sake its only for 9mnths, which is why most of us stick to them. We dont want to knowingly put our babies at risk, no matter how small that risk is

100% agree .

Personally I don't use sun beds due to the risks of cancer ETC they are so bad for your skin , I am fair hair and very pale , even on holiday I wear factor 50 to protect my skin .

If u want a tan get a spray tan , also there are certain brands of fake tan that are safe to use during pregnancy

Xxx

Totally agree :)

10 years ago I used to have the odd sunbed as the tanned look boosted my confidence. Then in 2009 I had a carcinoma (caused by intense UV rays) removed from my shoulder. I was lucky and needed no further treatment but I am now totally against the use of sun beds. They cannot even be compared to a few hours spent out in the sunshine, where we can cover up and wear protective sunscreen, the rays are totally unfiltered and penetrate the skin deeper than you can imagine! They are so dangerous, so to use a sunbed while pregnant to me would be unimaginable and unnecessary! This is just my personal opinion though, but to be told you have a cancerous growth on your body changes your outlook on these things.

Wss^

In dermatology we had light treatment, which was basically s walk in Sun bed. The difference was you could control the strength of the UV and which type of UV Ray to use ie A or B. This was safer than a Sun bed, but was by no means safe iykwim. It could only be used for a certain time which had to be built up, and only for so long. So once you'd had so much exposure, you couldn't use it anymore without a consultant review and signing a disclaimer. The scatty thing is people go way over this limit just using commercial beds.

So even when you have control of it, it's not 'safe' x

I don't like sunbeds, not just for the cancer risk (obv that's scary) but also for the fact that I don't want to look like a wrinkled ball sack by the time I'm 40.
No crowd feet and premature wrinkles for me :) x

I have psoriasis pretty bad, and the only thing that keeps it under control is UV treatment, this type in the hospital clears it completely, but i have to really fight to get a course each time because of the health risk even when controlled.
However, because of this, i have kept it under control using tanning beds, which is less than ideal, but when a condition affects your life nd confidence as much as mine does, you weigh up the risks and benefits and do what you feel you have to.

But the point i wanted to make was that despite the fact that i have good reason to want to use a tanning bed, i stopped the very second i got pregnant, i am desperate to get on one because i am now suffering terribly. Its not just unsightly either, it is painful and it bleeds. And on top of stretch marks , water retention and all the other pregnancy joys i feel like a troll!
But i just think its really sad that some ladies cannot just step away from the sunbed for a few months because they want a tan, yet i can muster the self control to stay off one!
Everyone takes their own risks, and yes they are entitled to make their own decisions, but laying on a tanning bed pretty obviously raises your body temp and you are probably cooking your baby. I am amazed hat any tanning shop owner would let a pregnant lady in anyway, that is really irresponsible in itself.
