views on sunbed use during pregnancy!!

But if your opinion is that those people are selfish, why should you not say that? No one mentioned anyone personally!

I dont disagree with you, but we arent here to debate the risk of skin cancer to the mother - we all know the risk of skin cancer to the user pregnant or not, but the fact remains, there is NO evidence to say it harms a baby. Even the NHS itself says 'there is no evidence to suggest a sunbed can harm the baby' - so why is it selfish not to give something up, when there is no evidence whatsoever by anyone in the medical profession that it is harmful to anybody other than yourself?

What I don't like is women being made to feel "selfish" for their choices by some smug sanctimonious do-gooder, same goes for breastfeeding, choice to go back to work/stay at home... etc etc etc

I have to agree here, it should be an individuals choice based on how they perceive the risk. Believe me I am v tempted by a sunbed but I won't risk it just in case. Same goes for alcohol, I wouldn't even have a sip until after birth. However as soon as someone dares tell me to breast feed or tells me not to go back to work, they will get the sharp end of my tongue!

Your skin is much more sensitive to the sun, high factor protection is needed. Chloasma often occurs in pregnancy and because I'm unlucky already get this anyway (its darkening patches of skin, usually on face, made worse by the sun).
I'm praying it doesn't get really bad for new as I'm very self conscious about it every summer.
As for sunbeds, my opinion is that you're stupid to do something that increases your risk of cancer just for a tan, and that's my opinion so sorry if anyone is offended by that!
At the end of the day you have to make personal decisions as to what risks you'll take but being pregnant is a blessing and I personally couldn't do anything to endanger my baby. Everyone has to judge what is an acceptable risk to them, but you're responsible for another life so I would definitely judge people who treat their bodies badly while pregnant as it's just unacceptable. And I mean excessive drinking, smoking, drugs etc not the odd McFlurry! :-)

Is this what's known as "the mask of pregnancy"?
There was a lady in clinic who had this really badly. She said there was nothing could be done for her. It was awful, she was so self conscious about it :( x

It is individual choice but we were asked for our opinions and from what I've read, that's what the OP got.
No one (except one) mentioned work or feeding.
Lets not turn this into an anti BF thread Or working mums V sahm thread!

I think you are totally missing the concept of risk ...

I'm bowing out - this is nonsense!

I used to use the sunbed pre pregnancy, I stopped using them as soon as I found out I was expecting as I didn't feel the need to be tanned. I generally only used them in anticipation to a weekend out around the town. Not only that but I didn't see any benefit to going on them whilst pregnant. Nothing a little bit of fake tan cant fix.

Hahaha I thought your post was very sensible hun :) xx

It's good to see the laws that are no in place stopping young girls from using the beds. About time too' can't believe it's taken so long x

Thank you Ladies for replying to my post. It was interesting reading everyones view on this topic, I thought it would be a good one. Personally I would never use a sunbed during my pregnancy due to the high risk of increasing my core temp and this causing harm to my unborn fetus and he/she is unable to reduce their temp unlike ourselves. I certainly feel that getting a tan is not even in the same equation as ensuring the health and safety of my unborn child. x

i think the issue is whether there is danger or potential fanger to an unborn.....i think im gonna need help wording this.....so forgive me...

for me there is potential danger to my unborn so i rule out everything i possibly can...i dont lift heavy things, i done eat the wrong things i dont smoke i try not to even sleep on the wrong side of my body etc etc..... just as i dont smoke post partum because it endangers rhe bahy......etc etc... however ff doesnt ensanger my baby, going to work doesnt endanger it etc etc....im using endanger but i think ita quite strong a word to use tbh but im really saying potwnrially risk i spose.....

i hope that makes sense x

why do something that MAY harm your baby? I think its totally irresponsible and SELFISH!!

especially as its for vanity reasons.

I know there is a long list of "donts" when pregnant. But for christ sake its only for 9mnths, which is why most of us stick to them. We dont want to knowingly put our babies at risk, no matter how small that risk is

torally agree with above....after baby sunbed yourself.smoke yourself etc as much as you want my tjought woild be so long as baby is fine etx etc z

Yes, that's it. I used to have it a lot worse, caused by the pill probably but they don't know. As ever when I came off it for years it didn't go away. It makes you really paranoid. Makes me dread the summer a bit! Maybe I'll be lucky and pregnancy will bizarrely reverse the effect! Xx
