useful things to ask at doctor's appointment?

Hi

So i gather the doctor's appt is a bit underwhelming, as far as i can tell you get given the phone num for a midwife... Are there any forms you get at this stage?

But are there any questions you asked or wished you'd asked the doctor afterwards that would be useful?

(The grumpy receptionist gave me the curmudgeonly old man doctor as opposed to the friendly female doctor who i had been seeing re ttc, so i am prepared for a lowkey event!)

Not a lot just any thing ur unsure of....such as what ur aloud or not aloud to eat etc, any medication ur on may need checking, ask about supplements.....x

When i went to my first doctors appointment he perscribed me folic acid and i had to fill in my maternity exemption form which enables you to get free dental work and free persriptions. I have only had this appointment so far as he refered me to the hospital (he asked me what hospital i wanted to give birth at so maybe best to be sure before you go) about 3 weeks ago and i rang them today they are letting me know the date of my midwife appointment/scan by weds this week. I dont think theres much to ask to be hoenst unless youve had complications before. My appointment with GP was really quick im going to leave all my questions to the midwife when i finally meet her. So just know which hospital you want to go too and may have a wait to get hospital appointment. Hope this helps a little im new to all of this xx

My doctor didnt know much about pregnancy really! He just made sure I knew what to eat and what not to eat, all the obvious stuff really. I did ask him about using T Gel Shampoo as it says on the bottle its not for pregnant ladies but he didnt really know what to say and told me to go to Boots Pharmacy instead for some advice! xxx

I am seeing one of the men GP's tonight (he deals with all the pregnant women though!!)

I am going as I want to request an early scan, also I want a repeat prescription for my high dose Folic Acid.

Other than that I have nothing I want to say or ask??? I'll let him take the lead and tell me what the next steps are!

Seriously - is T-Gel not suitable for use in pregnancy??

No because it has tar in it. I was gutted because I really need it! But the midwife told me not to use it anymore and to use head and shoulders instead (which hasnt helped) so I'm off to the pharmacy later because apparently theres some other shampoos I can use and might be able to get them on free prescription too.
Its mad not being able to use shampoo! Its not like I want to eat it! xxx

My dry scalp has flared up a little and I was going to start on the T-Gel as soon as I finish my Palmolive anti dandruff shampoo (whcih is very nearly finished?)

Let me know if you find a good substitute hun

Doctor was pretty useless, he commented (unsolicited) that some people contact the midwife to sort the booking appointment when they want which he thought was absurd and that the midwife will get in touch with me when it suits her (at about 12 weeks)

I didnt get a choice of hospital but as it was the one i wanted anyway that was ok

Other views he expressed were that only people who drinks half a bottle of wine a day are going to have "babies with flat heads" and that ibuprofen is ok to take in first trimester. I could go on.

Anyway at least i am in the system now, guess i just sit tight for 6 weeks and hope that baby is doing well

....ok just caught up on your ttc journal - *sigh* what a pain! At least your oh is happy for a private scan, that is good. And hopefully it will put your mind at rest.

Btw i bought my oh a blood pressure monitor for xmas, it was really cheap and is easy to use. If you dont hold your arm in a particular way i think BP readings may be higher than reality so perhaps that's been affecting your readings? I am going to take mine again tonight (dr didnt do it obviously!) As it had already dropped from 120/80 to 96/70 last week

Sorry hun, but your post really did make me giggle! I knowit really isn't funny but it sounds like your Dr was on some wind up / hidden camera show

At least the ball is rolling though and I am sure the midwife will pick things up when the time is right?

What BP monitor did you buy?

Dr told me just to sit however I wanted so I was kind of supporting my own arm and not resting it on anything so to speak? Also we were talking and I have been told before not to talk?? (Well I think I have?? Maybe I am imagining it!)

The bp monitor brand is omron and it was about 13 or 15 pounds

If you talk while taking it it makes your bp level go higher (according to my oh who told me to shuttit while taking mine this morning). Time of day also makes a difference (higher in the evening)

I think your arm needs to be resting on the table and you should have a straight back while it's been taken

My bp has now gone down from usual 120/80 to 106/67 this morning xx
