I think I had the most uncomfortable night I have experienced this pregnancy. :?

Had a friend round for a bbq last night and I only managed to eat 2 burgers before getting full up. At bedtime, I had to have a nice glug of Gaviscon to settle the heartburn and went to bed. I just could not get comfortable either with my body pillow or without. It didn't seem to be muscular or tummy ache related I just felt really out of sorts. Managed to drop off, but woke up an hour and a half later feeling really uncomfortable and the baby was behaving like it was on a bouncy castle! No matter which side I lay on, I got a stitch and kicked half to death. So I ended up reading for an hour from 5-6am then got up at 6am for an hour to see if that would help. It did thankfully and I then went back to bed for a couple of hours.

Has anybody else had nights like this? This is the first time I have had major sleep problems and I am hoping this isn't going to continue til July

I have a new abbreviation for the baby. Instead of LO, this one is LS for little sod! Takes after his ruddy father

I have about 1 in 3 nights where I don't sleep well. Just feel really uncomfortable and hot and cannot settle, from about 3am - 5am - really annoying!

Ive been having bad nights aswell and i didnt think i would start this early in pregnancy :( .

I find when im lying on my side i cant stay there for long as my arm starts to hurt so im always tossing and turning :( .

I'm constantly getting a dead arm lying on my side and the have to put up with excruitating pain while I turn over onto the otherside

I get the dead arm thing too. I can get reasonably comfortable (bearing in mind the SPD and baby kicking) but then get a tingly arm! :wall:

Maybe it'll get better when we are all used to it!?

I asked one of my friends who had a baby in November how she was coping with the disturbed sleep patterns and she said - no problem, she got plenty of practice when she was pregnant!

The tingling arm/pins & needles is another symptom of pregnancy, called carpal tunnel syndrome! :(

I've been have bad quality sleep too these past 2 weeks, as I'm very conscious about the position that I'm sleeping in. I'm used to sleeping on my back, but now trying to sleep in the optimal left-hand side position, and finding it hard to sleep. Tried using normal pillows to support that position, but they just kept falling off the bed, so have invested in a Dream Genii support pillow from the NCT. It seems to be working, but still not getting good quality sleep like before.

Why is the left hand side supposed to be so good ?

Sleeping on your back causes the weight of the baby to press onto your spine, back muscles, intestines, and the blood vessel inferior vena cava which in turn can cause inefficient digestion, impaired breathing and decreased circulation.

There's no harm in sleeping on your right side, however lying on your left side has been shown to improve the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta and it helps your kidneys efficiently eliminate waste products and fluids from your body (which help reduces swelling in your ankles, feet, and hands).

OopsyDaisy thanks for the explanation.

I hope sleeping on my right side helps reduce my swelling :( My ankle (just one - on the left side) is a bit swollen tonight.

my yoga teacher told me if I want to lie on my back to put a pillow under my legs, right at the top of my thighs, as it tilts your pelvis slightly and reduces the pressure on your spine etc....

I find I have bad dreams if I sleep on my left hand side, is quite odd really.
