So finally after calling the doctors 5 times they agreed to see India, who at 4 weeks to the day still hasnt lost her cord. the other day it went all oozy and today it smelt so bad (like rotten fish)

The looked at it, and found that scar tissue has caused an umbilical granuloma and something with the abdominal wall. It was horrible, they pulled it up really far, and it was all like fresh umbilical tissue underneath, not dry at all anymore.

Has anyone else delt with this problem. poor girl still hasnt had her first bath!

Yes

Finlay had this and was given cream to dry it out but it didn't work and was told to stop using it. Ne now has the little bit as part fo his belly button so doesn't actually have a proper innie belly button :(

Fuciden I think the cream was

He had lost his cord but there was a bit left.

Evie lost her cord at 7 days but it stank like crazy!! OMG the smell was awful!!

Our MW told us to use lots of talc on it A) to dry it out and B) to help with the smell. The day after I started using the talc it fell off...

:D x

Becky had an umbilical granuloma that eventually cleared itself up at around 12 weeks. There is still a tiny bit (I mean literally 2mm worth) left and she's now 5 months but the GP isn't bothered and you can't see it unless you look for it. Thankfully in our case it never got infected - we just kept it clean with boiled water and cotton wool and it eventually started to shrivel. Was bright red and not very pretty to look at but it never smelled. HV mentioned something about using silver nitrate to dry it up (she advised against talc) but said this can be uncomfortable for the baby and they eventually dry up by themselves. We were never told not to give her a bath, though.

I would try and let it get fresh air as much as possible, keep her nappy folded down so it doesn't rub against it and keep it as clean as possible using cooled boiled water.

We were never told not to give her a bath, though.

her cord is still attached. now at 30days....lol thats why she hasnt had a proper bath yet. the granuloma is underneath it preventing the cord to dry up at the base and drop off like normal.

Glad to hear you've found an answer and that India is OK
Surely you could bath her though? Have they said not it? I know my HV with Isaac suggested alcohol wipes to encourage it to drop off, never heard of using talc, would have thought that could possibly cause a negative reaction. Sending very best wishes, I'm sure she'll be having tummy pics with no cord real soon :D

Aimee had one. The GP gave us a silver nitrate stick but I was scared to death or using it on her so decided to try salt. I used a really thick salt paste on it for 2 days and it went. No problems.

Hi there,

we were advised yesterday that Aaron has umbilical granuloma and the docs will need to administer Silver Nitrate on him..we are off now in half an hour to have this done..will report back

neev: do let us know how it went. India had silver nitrate put on it last wednesday it turned the skin around her tummy black..eeek, lol, we've had no luck yet....still got the silly cord :)
but im thinking it may be the last few days with it, it seems to be less attached. We've been using alcahol whipes to dry it up.

It was not a bad experience, I was told it would hurt him but he slept right through it, the doc has to redo it in 2 weeks because apparently once is not enough. So India might need it again at a 2 weekly interval?

We had seen a paedatrician night before we went to get his granuloma sorted and she adviced to TELL the doc to put vaseline all around his belly button area otherwise it will stain his skin. She even said most doctors will refuse but if they do take a tub of vaseline with you, so we did but luckily the doc did put vaseline and he does not have stains

I hope this helps
