Hi, was just wondering if anybody has had radioactive iodine treatment and now ttc?
I had it July 2006 and was told to not ttc till six months after which we did and we are now ttc 2yrs.

I haven't, but didn't want to read and run and I got curious - what is radioactive iodine treatment, and what's it for?

Hi Melissa, Are you ready for this?!! Essay alert!!
Radioactive Iodine treatment is given when you have an overactvie thyroid which I had for over 5yrs, they tried to treat me with a drug called carbimizole on and off you take it for 18months then come off see if it has stopped the prob but never did.
Then in 2006 had what they call a thyrotoxic storm basically very overactive blood pressure through roof and to much thyroxine in my system it made me hallucinate all sorts had hosp stay and mega dose of carbimazole, again it didnt work so specialist recomended radioactvie iodine.
It a small capsule that you take and iodine goes straight to the thyroid gland and has an amount of radioactivty in it that kills of the gland then you gradually go underactive and they put you on thyroxine to provide you with enough thyroxine.
As soon as you take the radioiodine you have to stay away from preg women, kids and elderly for 3 weeks as you give off radiation. (good bit 3 weeks off decorated whole house)
Drs recomend not ttc for 6months after to make sure radiation is out of system so we did and started ttc jan 07

The thyroid controls metabolism so overactive I lost loads of weight was quite hyper ( still am a bit!!) and you can get bulging eyes also known as graves disease, underactive you gain weight and feel tired. (should have put that bit at the top)

Hope it makes sense if not ask away x x Also meant to say gonna start charting tomo on paper for now got app with ferility people in febxx

i have an overactive thyroid, i just take thyroxine for it. i was considerin the radioactive treatment but obviously it wudnt be practical for me bein away from my lo for 3 weeks.
im wishin u all the luck hun xx

Hi Jodie, how come you take thyroxine for overactive thyroid are you borderline between over and under?

Thought it must have been, you dont need radioiodine for under active hun you wont ever have to be away from bubba for 3 weeks x x

i know. origionaly i had an overactive so they wanted me to have it but it swung the other way on its own.
unfotunatley in a way as i put LOADS of weight on coz of it.
but im gunna be ttc at the end of this year so hopeful it wont have an effect agen x

Aha right all makes sense now, I know 3 weeks is a long time and if we had a baby wouldnt want to be away, but best thing I ever did was have the radioiodine feel like a sane person now well almost, hope you stay under its much easier to manage most people with it swinging back and forth seem to settle once having a baby.

What the hell you talking about weight you look fab in photo!!

I did put on but seemed to have balanced out now went from looking like a pow to an elephant now just average size 14 and now have wardrobe that hasnt got selection from 8-18!!

lol thanx but u can only see the top half of me in the foto.
im sure it will be ur time soon, its easier sed than done but if u relax it will happen.
my sis was ttc for 2 years and then they gave up. that month they had sex once n got pregnant....just goes to show what the mind can do
