thrush *been docs*

Sorry to reopen this thread - terrible itchy pain yesterday and today so I went to Boots and they wouldn't let me get the cream! They said you're not allowed to use it when pregnant unless you have special say so by your midwife or it's prescribed by the doctor.

What's the deal with that?! They told me to use natural yogurt in the mean time until I can get a doctors appointment. My OH thought it was hilarious and asked me if I wanted strawberries with it :wall:

I could understand if the pessary wouldn't be allowed, but I wouldn't have thought the cream would cause any problems? Argh :x

i have the same problem at the moment, been told not to use the pessery whilst pregnant, but its internal problems i have, sorry to sound crude here, but i cant stand it anymore.. how do i clear it up, i feel like im on a period 24 hours a day... :wall:
Im changing 3 -4 times a day, surly something isnt right.. HELP

Went to Asda Tamworth and it wasn't on the shelf it was at the pharmacy and I couldn't be bothered to go through it all again today, so I'll go to Boots and get the one that's on the shelf that's for general "feminine itching". I have had no choice but to smell of yogurt all day, and it's awful!

To treat thrush, the preparations available are in the form of a vaginal tablet, intravaginal cream, external cream and oral capsule. The oral capsule is not suitable for use during pregnancy. The vaginal tablet and intravaginal cream can be used alone or in combination with the external cream - the internal tablet/cream will get rid of the infection (as it contains a much higher concentration of the anti-yeast ingredient) and the external cream is just to soothe the symtoms. The internal tablet/cream are usually used as a single application (unless you've been prescribed a pack of vaginal tablets that contain 3 or 6 tablets, in which case you would need to insert once a night for 3 or 6 consecutive nights respectively). If the use of an applicator to insert the tablet is of concern, then insert with a clean finger like how you would insert a tampon, best done last thing at night, so that the tablet can remain inside the vagina during sleep and can get to work.

The reason why some pharmacists refuse to sell Canesten products to pregnant women is because each medicine has product licenses which restrict who and what conditions the medicine can be sold for. Even though Canesten is safe for use in pregnancy, if the product licence does not allow the sale to pregnant women, then it is at the discretion of the pharmacist whether or not to make that sale. Some reasons for this is that thrush can also display similar symptoms to other vaginal infections, therefore in the best interest of the patient, a referral to the GP is recommended for a proper diganosis to be made.

I sympathise with anyone suffering from Thrush. When I was married to my ex I went through a phase of getting it EVERY month. :wall: Can you imagine how that felt? It was awful. At that time the pessaries and cream weren't available over the counter either so I had to go to the GP all the time. I was on a repeat prescription for the stuff  Eventually I got an allergic reaction to the cream so couldn't use that either.

Turned out after many months of discomfort that it was my ex OH who had the problem. He was passing it back/forth to me all the time. When he got treated finally I was ok.

Since we broke up 9 years ago I have NEVER had it.

ps. Live plain yoghurt is a great emergency treatment for Thrush if you can't get to the docs/chemist. Also taking precautions like not too hot baths, no perfumed toiletries in the bath, cotton undies, not wearing jeans every day also help keep it at bay.

I am getting this ALL the time with this pregnancy, its disgusting and I feel really conscious about it. Also I now have a male midwife, I saw him yest and was too embarassed to ask for some cream/pessary DOH! However I got to go to the pharmacy anyway to get some calcium supplements so if the shop is empty I will ask in there haha!

can you not ask to ee a female midwife huni, its a womens choice afterall, we shouldnt have to see males if we dont want...
I would ask to see female..

Yeah I know but its my hang up, nothing to do with him, he is actually really good!!! I'll just have to get over it, after all I'm sure he's seen EVERYTHING in his time! :D
By the way what are the symptoms for a man having thrush then?

OverTheMoon - my ex didn't have any symptoms which is why it took so long to get him to the GP's for treatment! In a male they don't always get the symptoms.

Check out this link from the BBC for more in depth advice:-

My ex had one course of oral tablets for the Thrush at the same time as me and it cleared up for both of us. Amazing.

Hi ladies, I've had thrush on and off from around 20 weeks :x

The first time i went to pharmacy they said not to me as I was pg...see doc was what I was told.

Doc said next time get canesten pessary and cream and say it's for someone else.

I have been using this all through pg and is perfectly safe.

My Df has also caught it too and he has used the mens canesten cream.

Men have to use it for around 2 weeks though.

hope it clears up for you all soon, it's horrible!
