the truth about nurseries and creches

This is true, i started work in a nursery and never had any references or criminal record checks. i wasnt meant to be left alone with the babies but i was quite a few times, once when i had been working there for like 3 days i was left in a room with 3 sleeping babies and was told to change the nappy of another baby while they went for a chat in the next room. im not qualified either i was just a nursery assistant and i also wasnt meant to change nappies either but they made me do that aswell.this is all for a large private nursery who charge over £60 per day per child.
dont get me wrong the children were cared for fed and changed and things but i left after 6 weeks because the other nursery assistant left and i was left to do the work of two nursery assistants and i generally didnt like the environment.

Also i must add that there were webcams in this nursery but not in the nappy changing bits or the garden, and this is just my experience of one nursery and they were short staffed and rushed off there feet when i arrived and im sure not all nurseries are like that.

This is something im worried about at the moment, Harrison goes to nursery 2 afternoons a week, he is teething badly at the moment so needs a bib on constantly! I drop him off with a fresh one on at 1pm and pick him up with the same one on at 5:30/6pm soaking wet. He also has a cold at the moment and when I picked him up on Tuesday he had really bad dried on snot smeared from his nose to his cheek. They keep loosing things of his :x the list goes on! Yet I still let him go because I want him to interact with other children as he's gets older and understanding alot more

I have to say Leahs nursery is amazing, she loves it and never comes home dirty or with snot etc all over her. She always runs in n gives the girls hugs.

But watchin that prog is very scary :( n very sad. The camborne nursery is just iup the road from me :s

Leahs nursery has just had an Ofsted report/visit and all the parents have just been given a copy of the report. Its come back really good and one of the top ones in Cambridge - should bloody hope so, costing £900 a month to send Leah there!!!

I have just watched the programme and wrote to Buttons day nursery to tell them how appalling I thought they care were (what I saw in the documentary was enough for me to say this) :x :x :x

I have a great confidence in Jakes nursery. I instinctivly trust the staff there, especially Jakes keyworker who I get on with really well. We can natter until the cows come home and you can tell she really cares. There are 2 members of staff whos own children attend so that says something to me

i have always been against private nurserys, but i know that some parents only option is private when there is limited places in council ones, i have to say but all the council nurseries have inspections yearly and they are unanounced they go through everything and all members of staff have to have a criminal search done, my mum is the head of a council nursery and she has always had great reports but she said that the inspectors spend all day looking through policy and precedures and interview staff and parents and she says if there is anything to be found theses people will find it, you can see reports of every council nursery if you look up hmi inspection it gives you a good idea as to how bad/good the nursery is. i think also if its a private nursery it better being a partnership one this meens that although its private it has the same policies and inspections as the council ones.

im a nursery nurse/supervisor in private nursery and for over 5 yrs in different nurseries iv never ever had a prob really, i was so shocked at the programme tonight it was bad, but im proud to be a nursery nurse and look after my kids and il easily one day send my own kids to my nursery.

That bit about a 10 month old girl choking to death has really scared me, that's my worst fear when it comes to Ryan and now I'm gonna be worrying all the time when he's at nursery

tbh i think id rather take hope to mother and toddler groups then put her in nursery, i dont trust people with her as it is and this has made that fear worse, no way, no sending her to nursery :shakehead:

im sorry but...
why can these documenteris never film the good side of Nurserys and Nursery Nurses
Yes this Nursery was very bad and deserved all the bad press it recieved
But i am sick of the media making us out to be unqualified lay abouts who dont look after the care and eduaction of the children

I am qualified level 3 Nursery Nurse with 13 years experianace.
And im a damn good child carer.
Ofsted checks on us every 3 years and are very stringent with rules and regulations.
they never tell us when their arriving so we cant plan and sugar coat over problems. they see us warts and all.
and we recives brilliant reports.

The educational branch of Kent county council inspect us once a year and the EYFS are in regular contact.
No person who is unqualified or new member of staff is allowed to be left alone with the children and we stick to the adult to child ratios.
And only those with a level 3 or above are allowed to be room leaders of a group of children and be i charge of other staff.
We are a fantastic warm and family orientated nursery with an excellnt bank of staff of over 90% are qualified to level 3,more then is legaly required
We are always updating our knowledge and take part in training and courses to further benifit both the children and oursleves.

The parents fequently recommend us to family and friends and we have a waiting list of at least a year due to our good working ethics and postive feedback from parents.

I work damn hard for little pay and care deeply about each child in my care.
We as Nursery Nurses are expected and demanded to do more educational based work and administration by Ofsted and the EYFS
To show evidence that each area of each childs care health and safety and educational development is catered for.
For no extra pay In the Pre - School we do the same foundation Stage work as a reception teacher for a hell of alot less money.
ie developmet folders, monthly topic plans, weekly activity plans and observations on the children and so much more.
And we work longer hours so have less time to do this paper work
As i care about the children i do not do it in work time, i have to do it in my own time at home. (agian no extra pay)
And even with all this the children have fun are safe and healthy and thriving. Some dont even want to go home at the end of the day because they are enjoying themsleves.
The parents are actively encouraged to be involved in their childresn Nursery life and activities
The children are encouraged to plan and implement their own ideas topics and activites.
And we strive to look after the safety and health of each individual childs personal social and emotional development and educational needs

Why cant someone please show how hard working caring and dedicated we our to our jobs and the children in our care.
it really upsets me

 geez - you think you're leaving your kids in safe places.....

thats precisely why my hubbyand i chose to care for our kids ourselves. Even though its meant tightening our belts a little. No one looks after your kids like you or your familiy members do. Id never trust anyone to unless i trusted them wit h my own life.

I agree with Georgie lass!!

I am also level 3 trained nursery nurse I haven't worked in a nursery for a couple of years as I had sleep troubles and felt I could not give the level of care I would expect my child to be given if I was sleep deprived but until that point I was a head nursery nurse in a lovely nursery I loved my job and believe I was good at it all the children in my care were very well looked after! Nursery nurses are not paid well enough especially compaired to the rediculous costs to put a child into a private nursery!

I have had interviews in nurseries and turned the job down on the spot just from what I have seen of the nursery durring my quick tour, I also trained in an awful nursery for a short time and was disgusted at the care and the lack of respect for the rules of unqualified and unpolice checked staff not being allowed to be left unsupervised with the children or being allowed to change nappies but I saw this happen many times and was as an unqualified staff often left alone with children when I shouldnt have been. The staff were all very young and mostly newly qualified the staff turn over was very high! This particular nursery was a string of many nursery and each one I went to (we were often sent around to cover staff in the other nurseries) we as bad as each other the owner would decide someone was qulaifed enough even though they weren't purely based on how short staffed we were at the time. I would not have sent an animal to one of these nurseries let alone a child it really is frightening and I know this particualar nursery group always put on a good show for ofsted and was given a good report after each visit!!!

The last nursery I worked in was excelent and is where I stayed for most of my nursery nursing career and was a head nursery nurse, it is also where I will be sending my baby because I have no choice but to return to work but I will be confident that he/she will be well cared for and that new staffs references are checked, they are not allowed alone with children or to do nappies until their police checks come through and the nursery tries to employ staff over 20 and with experience if at all possible.
The biggest advice as a trained nursery nurse I would give people looking for a good nursery is to ask to spend a afternoon/morning/couple of hours in the nursery without your child to try and get a feel for the staff and the general running of the nursery it shouldnt be too difficult to tell whether the children genuinly are very happy and attached to the staff and if the staff seem to be relaxed and their normal self and not putting on an act but its not always easy to pay attention to all this when worrying about your child and what theyre doing!

I am 100% happy with Seren's nursery. TBH I feel that parents should take responsibility when choosing a nursery. We checked out all the nurseries sand put her in the one that fewlt the best, we had a number of visits. I am always chatting with Seren's key workers, there are 2 of them and both give me detailed accounts of Seren's sday and behaviour. i have done the occasional early pick up xso i can see what is happening. Now i have said this watch her nursery be on a tv programme ;)

My OH's cousin (aged 22) works in a nursery and she is an absolute psycho. Beween xmas and new year she had OH's 15 year old sister round at her house to sleep over with her two friends, who were 15 and 12. Anyway, her fiance (28.) was sat downstairs with the girls and she came down and started screaming and shouting at the 12 year old, accusin her of shagging her fiance  The 12 year old ran into the conservatry and she ran after her and locked her in there where she got right up in her frace threatening her, the girl was crying her eyes out. Then when she finally went back into the house she stubbed a fag out on her fiances head then got a knife to her wrists threatening to slit her wrists. All in front of the girls, the 12 year old was crying to go home but she wouldnt let her out of the house, eventually she let her go though. She didnt tell her mum or the police or anything. It really bothers me that this woman can work in a nursery, I would never leave my baby alone with her.
