Maybe I am more modern as with other people I have met who would also consider themselves to be catholics or muslims etc. Not everyone is extreme Squiklet and I personally think that wars are started by extremists in any religion but fear and prejudice are born out of views like yours. I have friends who are also catholics, one of whom is divorced and other 'catholic' friends who have had children out of wedlock.
Please don't think that all people of a certain religion are fundementalists in that religion - most are just trying to live a normal life like you!
I was born and raised a Catholic... I've been baptised (in the River Jordan too as we went on a pilgrimage to the holy land when I was 9), had my first holy communion and confirmation in the Catholic church... All my education has been through Catholic Schools and a majority of them in all girl Catholic School run by nuns.... My comments are not born out of ignorance.. on the contrary... My views are born out of years and years of education on the behalf of the Catholic church... some 16 years.
My mother is still a staunch Catholic. I left the faith because my beliefs did not tally with those of the Catholic church. I do believe in abortion in certain circumstances and I do believe in contraception, and I don't agree with the Vatican's stance over use of condoms in the 3rd World. I also don't agree with the vast amounts of gold hoarded in the Vatican museum when they try and raise money for the poor and third world countries.
I never said all Catholics are extreme, I said that the beliefs are ingrained as with Islam because they perpetrate ever aspect of your life IF you live as the teachings tell you too.. Catholics tend to take the bible how and when they want to as most religions take their holy texts, but I do have some experience on what it is like to be a part of a religion where your actions in this world are taken seriously in the after life, and if they weren't why was a dragged to confession at 12pm every Friday to confess my sins as a kid?. And to anyone who has experienced death... death is quite scary if you are told you will burn in hell for cleaning out the fish tank with your brothers tooth brush (yes I thought I would burn in hell for that one! but I was only 7).
As for the Uncle not acknowledging my daughter, that was on her father's side... the Jehova Witnesses side, who tend to be more fundamental which is why this thread was started, you know the whole blood transfusion thing... not the Catholic side... Catholics would never admonish a child, on the contrary, my mum's parish priest loves quoting "get em young, keep em strong". My daughter is allowed to go to church with my mum on special occasions, I think it's important that she learns about other religions. So really your comment Freya about fear and prejudice are born out of views like mine aren't wholly correct.
