I told my head teacher about an antenatal appointment I have coming up which is in school time. I explained my midwife only does appointments one afternoon a week and my head said "well you'll have to swop your PPA time and use it for the appointment then you'll not feel guilty about being out of school".
1 I wouldn't feel guilty in the slightest about attending the appointment!
2 I know she's not doing anything wrong as she's not stopping me attending but can you be made to use your PPA time for antenatal appointments? I was so surprised by her response I didn't know what to say!

She's not allowed to do that! Best place to get advice on how to challenge her would be the tes pregnancy forum, there's a couple of posters on there who will be able to give you good advice, there might even be a recent thread about it if you scroll down a bit.

She's playing mind games, almost challenging you to feel guilty.

I'm a deputy and you are entitled to all your ante natal appointments and shouldn't be made to swap and use your ppa, if you speak to human resources they'll tell you you're entitled, you could always ring them anonymously

Thanks both of you you've made me feel more rational I thought I was making a fuss about nothing as she's not actually stopping me going. I agree Nicejuicypear she's trying to make me feel guilty!

I would second the tes pregnancy forum as a good place to go as there was a similar conversation on there the other day. They can't make you repay the time, you are entitled to attend those appointments.

I'm pretty sure you don't have to use your PPA but just ring HR to be sure - that sounds like one bitch of a head you have there!!

No way! I'm a teacher too and you definitely shouldn't have to use your PPA time. Towards the end you could potentially have lots more appointments, does she expect you to swap PPA every week? Hope you get it sorted :-)

I was told that with my scan hun but I was only on temporary contract so didn't bother saying anything however if ur a permanent I would definitely say don't let that happen. I would say to the head thank you for suggesting I swap my ppa but I'd rather save that for use in school. End of the day your union will have your back all the way there's no way that's allowed it's whether you let it that matters.

Having said all that it also depends on ur head teacher. :-/
