Would love your opinions!!

I'd really like to get a tattoo as a reminder of this ttc time, i'm so in love with my oh and so excited that we are trying to make a little person out of our love (sorry that's so cheesy!!!), Im worried that ttc may take over our lives to the extent where we are only bd'ng to make a baby and it all becomes a chore so I want a symbol or something to as reminder of why we are doing this.

I have no idea where to start looking for ideas and it may take me months untill I find something perfect but if I fall pg before I get a tattoo could it be dangerous for baby?

Any thoughts will be great.

Sorry for the long winded question!

Thank you

BB xxx

tattoos are not safe to get done when pregnant, as your normal immune system can fight off tiny infections from the ink, plus the ink enters your bloodstream which can be fatal for the baby xxx

Omg sexy smurf, thanks so much for that, my tummy just dropped with the thought!!!

Would you say the best time to have one is whilst AF is here that way no chance of harming anything 'brewing'?

Xxx

I would do it if you get bfn, but before ov again? X

its dangerous for a baby yes, so wait til you have a baby then have something to remind you of a baby or if you really want one that much have something like a star i have a star in the middle of my shoulder blades for twins i lost 6 years ago, so try for something that you know what it means but still looks nice and get it in a decent place too x

There are several concerns about tattoos, so it's probably best to wait until after delivery to get one. Here are some things to consider:
  • Hepatitis B, a dangerous liver infection, and HIV/AIDS are two of many diseases that can be passed along through bodily fluids. This means you can catch these diseases if you get a tattoo from someone who uses a dirty needle. And it's possible for you to pass these diseases along to your baby while you're pregnant.
  • We don't know how tattoo dyes and inks affect a developing baby. Small amounts of chemicals that might be harmless to an adult can have a much bigger impact on a tiny fetus.
  • Most healthcare providers will give an epidural – an injection of anesthetic into the space around the spinal cord – to a woman with a tattoo on her lower back, but they may decide not to if the tattoo is recent and still fresh. There's no clear evidence for or against giving epidurals near tattoos. If you do have a tattoo on your back and are considering receiving an epidural for pain relief during childbirth, find out what the hospital's policy is before you're admitted.

The risks and reasons that a tattoo artist will not tattoo you during pregnancy are mostly to do with healing. Your immune system doesn't work quite as well when you're pregnant which means your tattoo MAY not heal quite so well.

The ink does not enter the blood stream if you're being tattooed by a reputable and experienced artist. The ink sits between the epidermis and the dermis.

If you're in a clean environment with a hygienic artist and follow your aftercare instructions then the risks of infection are very very small (much higher with a piercing).

My advice would be, if you're ttc and want a tattoo, choose a reputable studio, speak to previous clients and ask to see their local authority health and hygiene certificate.
However I wouldn't advocate getting a tattoo after your bfp as, lets face it, your body has better things to be doing than healing a new tattoo :)
I did like the idea of getting tattooed between cd 1 and ov day. No worries then :)

Thanks for the info girls, I've just googled it too, I was just curious.

There was a pic of a woman having her pg belly tattooed!! That is just wrong.

Thanks for the tip tabbi, I defo want it on my wrist so I can see it everyday ESP those crappy days when af arrives Grrr. The star sounds beautiful, so sorry about your loss.

Xxx

Thanks for the tip simone!!! Now i know what to look out for :) I best get a move on then as I do want another once I become a mummy which will be totally different

I had a tat done on my back when I was 17, me and my friend literally just walked in and picked one from the book! Although they were 'nice' there I would now want to go to a real artist who is creative enough to come up with an image to match my thoughts!!

I love watching la ink and wish Kat von d could do one for me!!!

I'm based in London have you ever ventured to a good studio down here?

Xxxx

I haven't :( Im pretty lucky in that I have some of the most wonderful artists in Scotland and count them as friends. Almost all of my tattoos (and that's a lot lol) are custom designed. It's good knowing you're getting a one off.

Id love to have a tattoo done by Nick Baxter. You should Google him, his work is amazing.
If you are interested in having something done soon Id be more than happy to look around / ask around for the best place to go in your area? Xx

Omg simone that would be amazing and so thoughtful of you!!!

Thank you, I would really appreciate it!! I've got a few studios on my wish list here in the centre of London but I just need to go in there and have a chat with them and see some of their work. I'll defo look look up nick Baxter.

You are lucky to have mates you trust to do your body art, I love really brightly coloured ones, some of the art work is just beautiful.

Do all yours have special meanings?
Xxxx

It's no problem :) I love looking at work and hearing experiences of studios

Your best bet is just to go in and be frank with a studio. If they're good, they'll be pleased you're asking questions and researching them.

No not all of them have meanings at all but they all (in one way or another) signify a time in my life. I can tell you where, when and why I had every single one and what was going on in my life. Kinda like a Facebook timeline for your body ha ha!
I love bright colours but there's something really beautiful in a black and grey tattoo. It takes a lot of skill on the artist's part.

I think it's lovely that you want something to remind you of this time xx

Lmfao, I was actually thinking the same thing about the ink going into the blood stream! I thought, I wonder what tattoo that is as if it went into your blood stream the picture wouldnt remain where you got it tatted it would move and fade a hell of a lot

Yeah I was told that it wont harm you but they dont do it as a risk obviously people are more seseptable during pregnancy..

the ink doesnt enter your bloodstream though lol you only tattoo the first couple of layers of skin?

its policy not to tattoo pregnant women but there are no laws, it is SO rare to get a nasty infection from a tattoo and if you do..........then you saw a shit artist and wasted y our money

It sounds awful... But the MAIN reason we didn't tattoo pregnant women was that IF something awful were to happen ie. Birth defect, miscarriage, etc, the tattoo artist really doesn't want to be held liable

No wonder you wouldnt tat a pregnant lady theres too many risks in pregnancy and the tattooist probably would get the blame even though personally Id wait, you dont URGENTLY need a tattoo and surely your skin will be there 9 months later.. if you are pregnant that is, if your not I personally dont see the harm..
