my mum wants to take me and baby swimming at the weekend.. has anyone got any tips for making it easier on the lil un? whats the best time to go within their feed/sleep cycle? Lol how long is reasonable to expect her to be happy in the water before wanting out again?

i dont know but didnt want to read and run but would love to know how other people introduced this!!

H loves bathtime so am hoping he will love swimming too!! Just waiting for his next jabs and then i will probably take him!!

Is there a period of time she is happy and content between feeding and sleeping? My LO can't go anywhere directly after a feed or I end up wearing it! We used a lot of bobbing about, bouncing him up and down into the water and singing etc. It really is good to have two of you and try not to stay in too long because she'll get cold fast, no matter how warm the kids pool is, probably only 20 mins or so the first time. If you go on the huggies little swimmers site they have a list of pools they consider to be baby friendly, ie accessible steps, changing facilities etc. If she's anything like Ross she'll be starving and knackered as soon as she leaves the pool!!!

Ill be taking Paige swimming in the next few weeks (just waiting on the swim nappy to arrive) and Im taking her to my gyms pool as its very shallow and quite warm. Im going with fob for extra support and will only be in the pool for about 20 minutes or so. They recommend you them swimming about an hour after a feed but if your feeding on demand I cant see how you'd try and work that out. :/

Hope you have fun though.

Yeah normally after a feed she can be happy and awake for up to an hour.. so will try and time it so i get to the pool.. feed her.. then change her in the 15 minute puke-danger zone lol

She is pretty regular on her feeds by herself, just under every 4 hours now, so easy enough to plan, and i dont have to worry about making up a bottle lol so if worst happens, ill just whap it out and feed her, did it in tescos!

arnt you meant to wait till after your 6 week check or am i thinking of something else?

oh right if you have been told its ok just go for it :)

When can I start swimming with my baby?

Parents used to be advised to wait until their baby had had their immunisations at two, three and four months before they took their babies swimming. But government health experts no longer believe this is necessary, so it's really up to you when you start taking your baby to the pool. "There are no medical grounds for waiting until your baby is immunised. However, most pools start classes at around 12 weeks," says Libby Tucker, a swimming teacher who specialises in parent and child courses. Remember too, that a noisy public swimming pool could be daunting for your newborn, so it may be worth waiting until he's a bit older. You will probably have to wait until you've had your six-week check before you can go yourself, anyway.

i knew there use to be a rule haha i thought i had baby brain

You are ok to go after your section Kat? We don't usually advocate swimming for 6 weeks after tummy surgery due to infection and general wound healing.. enjoy though, our pool says to allow an hour after feeds HTH

Aw cr*p really? Sucks.. I wont be able to go swimming for a while after she hits 6 weeks, as we are moving abroad, and there is only an outdoor swimming pool.. and its the middle east .. and i dont want to risk her, or my skin!

How much of a risk is it really? Everything external is healed up perfect my midwife said.. and ive just about stopped bleeding.

You may have healed on the outside, but it takes longer for everytrhing else to knit together, hence the 6 week rule, I wouldn't go before 4 weeks, and at that I would get a nurse/dr to look at wound before you go to make sure it is good...

sooy bout the funny replies Toby is creating :flower:

yeah they use to say for babies to wait untill after immunised but seems this has changed since which is good :) i dont think id want to risk it with you having a section not just that some kids will pee in the pool too yuck

Chlorine is there for a reason lol thats why they let you take babies without immunisations now, cause the chlorine kills the bugs :p

i know but still wouldnt want it in my cut haha i cant go if my eczema is bad because the chlorine kills my skin my eyes are watering just thinking about it lol

I would consider swimming excercise (even if it is just bobbing a baby around) and after a section its always best to wait until after your 6 weeks check.

I was only just starting to push Paiges pram at 3 weeks after my section, dont think I would have wanted to go swimming lol.
