When can you start taking a baby swimming? my oh is really looking forward to this! She has not had any jabs yet does she have to have them first? She is 3 weeks old tomoro xx

Hi. You can actually take your lo swimming from birth, although I wap concerned about him getting cold, and he was born in The summer. We took riley swimming at 12wks in a hydrotherapy pool which had a constant temp of 37 degrees. Your lo will love it, whenever you decide is The right time

Oh, and I forgot to say, congratulations on your new arrival.

As skimpy said you can take them from birth. If you are goingt to go regular its worth investing in a wet suit for your baby to help keep them warm for longer, dont bother with ones that range in sizes from 3-6 months and 6-9 months for example go for one thats going to last you up to a certain weight, may look very big in the early days but you will get lots of use out of it and will be more cost effective.

Hope you enjoy it :D

Ok thank you ladies :D
Well i will take her in a few weeks and see how we get on! i just worry cos of the cold weather and we would have to walk home after. dont want her getting a cold! if she enjoys it ill invest in a wetsuit then x

The common cold is a virus and cant be caught from being cold so if you want to go then dont let the weather stop you if she comes into contact with the virus then chances are she'll probably catch it. Unfortunately there isnt much you can do to stop them catching colds but it helps to build up their immune system.

My doctor did say to me recently that very small babies shouldn't really be taken swimming as viruses do spread in swimming pools MUCH more rapidly and dangerously than in the air generally. In fact she suspects the reason Connie is so sick this week is because she went swimming last week (with an instructor) and had her head under the water...

I waited until after the second set of jabs just to be on the safe side.

I've taken Connie since she was 6 weeks and she really enjoys the water now. In this weather I have the snowsuit so she's warm when we leave the builing and then we go straight home after so she's kept warm.

You can take babies from birth but obvisouly when you are ready if you are taking them.

Just find a pool thats warm - a baby pool or hydrotherapy pool. I'd also recommend a bodywarmer (Konfidence do fab ones) to keep the baby warm in the pool

Have fun!

Finlay has been going to waterbabies classes since nov now and hasn't caught a cold from swimming ;)

You really dont have to wait for their jabs. I mean, what our lo's are being vaccinated against are virtually extinct as ALL babies get them, so to suggest that they are at less risk in The pool after their jabs is misleading. jabs will not prevent them picking up nasties from anywhere, including The pool. We want our lo's to build up immunity dont we? That said however, it is true that viruses can multiply quicker if they are waterborne, damp surfaces and areas are The perfect breeding ground for them.

thx CBG was going to post aout this myself. anyobe know if you cab get teeny swimming nappies?

I started taking James at 4 weeks and he loves it. Swimming pools require your baby to wear an swim nappy as well as an over nappy to avoid leakages. Even though the pool was 30C James found he got cold quickly so I brought him a warm in water wrap, which I highly recommend.

Thanks ladies your advice has been great! im thinking of taking her in a week or 2! excited! What are over nappies? iv heard of the swim nappy but whats an over nappy? Sorry to keep asking lol! and does any1 know where i can get a cossie to fit her? x

Not all pools require the double nappy system - check with your local pool first just to make sure.

CBG - over nappy is a waterproof nappy. Waterbabies (the class we do) ask for them and call it a double nappy system. You put a disposable then the waterproof one on. Helps stop poo leaks (since wee doesn't get stopped by the disposables ;))

Huggies do swim nappies and so do Boots, Tesco and many other places. The small size should fit little babies :D

Costumes - try Boots but I would personally recommend a wetsuit/bodywarmer instead. We have a Konfidence one (they have a website) and it was £20 but lasts ages :D

i have taken adam every week (bar one or two when he was ill) since he was 4 weeks and matthew from 2 weeks, basically as soon as my bleeding stopped i was there.

we just used huggies swim nappies and bought the smallest size which i think are 7lb ones, they were still miles too big but they did the job, until very recently when i have got him some trunks which he wears over his swim nappy.

have fun!!
