When does the midwife normally start giving you sweeps? Is it once you're overdue or before? :eh: x x

hiya, ive just got back from my mw appointment and ive got my next appointment at 38 +6 weeks which is 25th october.. She's told me that if by then im fed up then she will give me a sweep. She did say it probably won't work but hey anythings worth a try :) x

Suppose it depends on ur midwife. I've got appointment Weds so I'll be nearly 38 weeks, maybe I'll mention it and see what she says. Thanks x x

You can have sweeps before due date but sometimes they don't work! My friend had 3 and still had to be induced at 12 days over due!! I'm gonna try to go as natural as poss! I'll only ask for a sweep when I'm 10 days late although I'm starting to get desperate to get this baby out so might change my mind by 40 weeks lol

i think it depends on your mw ours dont till due date but others do i think they only work if your near ready anyways x

Thanks ladies. Yeah prob best to wait I suppose, don't want bubba coming too soon anyway  But like Lacey's Mummy, I might change my mind after another couple of weeks  x x

i was looking forward to my sweep at 41 weeks and then when i got there they said my cervix was too tight shut and so posterior they couldn't do one. I think they basically need to be able to get the tip of their finger into the cervix to do it. So I was gutted and cried! i didn't think there was a possibly they might NOT be able to do it.. but they did book me in for induction for the following week and eventually i had my baby girl in my arms and forgot about everything in those last few weeks!

My mw said they were most effective at 10 days over and refused to do one before!! Not fair!!

Hey girls,
Are these sweeps painful? sorry im a wuss. In labour anything goes and thats fine. I fine smear tests really uncomfortable and have had trouble having them done in the past. Could this be the same prob as you treeze? Thansks x

hi twinkle.. i think it was just that the position of the babys head meant that my cervix was pointing sort of backwards towards my bum so they almost had to get around the babys head to get to the cervix. I don't normally have a problem with smears and they do say the position of your cervix can change. It was a bit uncomfortable her trying to find my cervix but when she did she said it was completely closed (which it remained to be for at least another week!)

I was a bit scared as i had heard it can hurt too although some of my friends had sweeps and said it wasn't painful at all, and others said it was a bit uncomfortable.

My only advice would be try not to rush things no matter how desparate you are to get things going. I was due on the 8th, went in for induction of the 15th (so only 7 days over) and the induction took a couple of days to get me going so i ended up having her on the 18th. Even the 18th was only 10 days overdue so i am deffo going to ask to be left a bit longer this time for induction and maybe try and go in at about 10 days over. i reckon a few extra days of waiting could have done the trick or even sped up the induction process if i was a few days further on.

anyway, good luck... you will be fine whatever happens and you will probably surprise yourself how brave you are for the sweep. I always find the waiting and worry before so much worse than the actual thing you're waiting for! x x x

My sweep is booked for this Thursday if I'm still going my mw said it's routine for 41+ weeks but her guidelines in this area said she isn't allowed before then so it prob depends on area xx
