Currently me and oh are trying to conceive. I'm working part time and she is on esa and disability living allowance and cannot work. I'm really stressing out about money at the minute with the cost of a child when the time finally comes. I'm hopefully gonna be passing my driving test soon and really worried about the cost of insurance for the first year, aswell as petrol costs and funding for a baby as i'm really hoping to be pregnant soon. I've done some quotes and sum's and it seems we're not gonna have money left over for anything, after food and bills :-( This is not helping ttc journey. X

If everyone waited till thy wrre 100% financially ready for a baby no1 would have a baby!
But u do need some.money behind you. My OH and i find a big diffrence in our wages when baby arrives as ill be going bk part time and he may have to work a fee extra hours for the extra cash.
you will get help from the govement so it might be worth going to direct.gov and doing online questionnare to see wht ur both entitled to.

It can be a very stressful time thinking about money with a new born. But u both need to sit down and go over everything u pay for.. anything u buy each month that u can do without. If u really dont think u can u may unfortunately have to put ttc on hold until.u can.work it all out.

hope u get it sorted x

I currently work part time, and for part time I come out with a decent amount each month. My oh cannot work as she's registered disabled, and if I got a full time job we wouldn't really see much difference in money. We can save now while we are ttc but when a baby comes i'm worried about everything coming together at once and not coping if you get what I mean? Xx

I would seriously re-consider TTC when your in this state financially.

How can your OH go thro a pregnancy and looking after a baby when on disability? Sorry if that sounds dumb, i know how much work it is being pregnant and with a newborn, how will your OH manage if she's disabled? What about these new assessments for disability (ATOS) how will that work with regards to employment, will they not say that if she can look after a baby then she can work?

I take it your aware of the benefit changes and tests for people who are claiming any sort if disability money??

If not, i'd check it out

You might want to consider more hours when they bring in Universal Credits this year, people under a certain imcome & on tax credits will be forced to seek higher paid work.

Oh right ok, sorry, just seen your sig.

it'll be difficult when your pregnant money wise but when baby comes you will be entitled to a good amount of tax credits. However bear in mind they are changing everything about this year with Universal Credits, with regards to tax credits and also the changes to disability benefits too.

Oh and I went from part time to full time, doubled the hours and walked out with less, so I know where you are coming from with regards to it being pointless, but it wont be so pointless when they bring in these changes! Infact I think alot of people will be hoping for more hours, rather than job seek. Something to consider.

I've just read up on Universal Credits, apparently all benefits will fall under one and if you receive Working Tax credits, and you work part time under so many hours you will be forced to seek higher paid work. If anything this is more confusing! My partner is a qualified chef and would love to work but her gp has said if she gets a job she will physically end up in hospital and has gave her a permanent sick note. I can't switch jobs now as i've just qualified for maternity leave as my probation period is over. It's just catch 22. X

Yes UC is very confusing, and even though welfare reform has been all over the news not alot of ppl know about UC taking over most of the benefits and the changes it will have. Especially with regards to ppl receiving tax creds being forced to work. I think they've kept that quiet actually.

I suppose the bottom line is, do you keep the job you have and possibly have to seek another, or do you hunt just now for more hours, so as to save the bother down the line. As you said, its catch 22. But I personally believe that when this comes in, ppl will get a shock and frantically try to increase hours/seek full time work, which obviously means less hours for others. Why not be ahead of the game.

I guess so. I do a healthy amount of overtime nearly every month so would I still be forced? I've no idea x
