Hi,

so now Sam's on formula, partly because of his weight loss, we started him on SMA Gold but he was throwing up about half of each feed so I was advised to switch to SMA Staydown which has stayed down but now we have the problem of constipation. He hasn't done that many poos at all since he was born- 3 meconium ones on day one and then a normal for breastfeeding one on day 8 but then we mixed fed for a few days and he's now been on Staydown for 72 hours. I had a standard mustard poo yesterday morning which looked like the ones Elliott had on Gold but since then I've had a few hard rabbit poo type poos every few hours which he strains to pass. They're quite hard and it does seem to upset him more than I'd expect. He hasn't been on it for long obviously so might this get better? On the other hand it feels wrong feeding him it if I'm bunging him up and causing him pain, he was weighed again yesterday and his weight was the same as on Sunday so I don't want to change if he ends up spewing again as he's not back to birth weight yet and it's a lot of change in one week given that he's only just off the breast and has changed from SMA Gold already...?

The midwife is coming back tomorrow to weigh him again, she has previously suggested boiled water for the fact that he hadn't pooed but I don't want to give him too much of this if it stops him feeding as he's not enthusiastic at the best of times- how much do you give if you give it and when? I read someone's post on here about constipation so bad that it tore their baby's bottom so I'm worried about that now. Wish I could stop worrying about feeding him and just get on with enjoying him!

If you had to change, what would you change to? Do some babies throw up Gold but not Aptamil for example? Elliott was on Gold then White and was very straightforward and has never been constipated so this is all new to me!

At the moment I'm keeping it as it is until I speak to my midwife but just really value your experiences and advice!

Thanks
+++

Hi
You could ask for cow and gate instant carabel gel powder. Alban could never keep any milk down so we took him to our GP and from about 12 weeks he was prescribed the powder. It is apparently just like cornflour you put in gravy (but obviously not). You just use your usual formula powder, we use Aptimil, and 1 scoop per 3floz of carobel. You can only get it on prescriptin.
