Does anyone know how to best avoid the night time misery that is SPD?

If I move in the middle of the night I get the shooting pains (I do during the day too but I'm awake so it's ok) but it wakes me up and I panic incase it was a tummy pain and not SPD!

I've also found that adjusting my seat in my car helps because when I used to push the clutch I'd get the pain, so at least I can drive ok now!

I think I'm just getting frustrated as I'm not sure I could handle 6-8 weeks of these sleepless nights!

xx

i find sleeping with a pillow between my legs helps. I think i must clench my legs around it cos when i wake in the middle of the night in a different position it is still trapped there!

Well you could start by going easy on all that cleaning that you posted about, i find when i have done loads during the day i'm fine at the time but as soon as it gets to night time im really suffering by then.

My physio recommends a pillow between your knees, its does help but doesn't ease the pain when moving round i'm afraid.

I do keep a pillow between my knees.

If I need to turn from one side to the other, I keep my knees together and kind of 'lift' my hips to the middle, then again to the other side. Take each movement slowly too.

I also take two paracetamol about an hour before bed with the doc gave me, but don't take these in the day and couldn't really say if they make things better or not as each day varies!!

Defo calm down on the cleaning, a nice balance of movement and rest seems to see it calm down a bit by the night time.

Are you sure it's not sciatica? Shooting pains sound more like sciatica.

I'm suffering with sciatica on my left side and spd which only affects me at night time. My pelvis and hips seize up overnight. I have one of those wedge cushions from Mothercare that I put between my knees and it does make things more comfortable. But turning over is getting harder and harder as the weeks go by.

I try and bring my knees together as well and slowly turn over, it's very uncomfortable and can be painful.

I was advised to make sure that you bring your knees together and swing yourself around and get out of the car that way.

I had this in my first pregnancy and it disappeared for me almost immediately after the birth :)

Sorry, but I never found anything that made any real difference. I hope you fine something that helps. I remember the pain of SPD.

I don't sleep on my side at all...

I sleep with lots of pillows propping me up lying on my back. MW says that is fine because its not like sleeping on your back flat (which restricts blood flow).

This way, I don't lean on my hips at all and I don't turn over at all at night.

Sometimes I've given up and spent an hour or two on my side, but mostly I find that sleeping in a sort of sitting up position really helps because I'm never on my hips and I never turn over in the night.

Maybe try this?

I hope you manage OK until baby is here!

I don't know anything about SPD so I can't help you. I've had back ache all day and sat on a birthing ball for 20 mins and it's helped alot, maybe that would work?

Sending you loads of hugs

Besides sleeping with a cushion between my knees, I haven't found anything else that helps but I feel your pain

This isn't going to help much but I find napping during the day is the only way to catch up on my sleepless restless nights!

TBH I find that any position is uncomfortable after about 45 minutes which means I tend to wander listlessly around the house for most of the day. I have just got my nursing chair today which glides and does help me feel comfy, perhaps I shall try napping in it tomorrow :D

I have SPD too and find that my nights are restless, I cant seem to find any position comfy with or without the use of pillows.

I usually have about an hour's sleep on my side, then wake up with shooting pains down my hip and leg then struggle to turn over, to find that I need the loo, so I get up, go to the loo, and lie back down on my other side! This happens all through the night.

I only seem to have better sleep when I have a warm bath just before bed and also I try to catch up on naps through the day, though this is also proving difficult. My bags under my eyes are getting darker! :bored:

Well hopefully not long for me though, when the real sleepless nights come in!!

I know not helpful but their is comfort in knowing others are feeling the same!

Hun get a silk wrap or sleep on the outside of a sleeping bag!! Its amazing the difference when you turn! I sleep on my silk kimono style wrap and I kinda glide over when turning! Its great! Instead of my hip feeling like its detaching lol!! :cheer: (physio told me to do it, she was right!!)

Ooh what a great idea :D I'll have to try that!

I was going to mention that I borrowed a satin nightgown from my mother and although I wasn't terribly comfortable because having a pillow between your legs whilst wearing a nightgown isn't idea, it was a thousand times easier to turn. Everything else is a repeat of what other people said: a pillow between the knees (one that makes your hips go to a neutral position or else there is no point) and being sure never to spread them apart more than about six inches (? this may depend on your body type- but where they are neutral). I wake up to turn and usually get my husband to help hoik me around. Ha...
