Nurse!

Ten years in sales has finally got to me I just can not bear it it doesn't challenge me and it's boring and stresses me out

Now don't get me wrong I know nursing isn't a piece of cake no matter what area I go in me mams a nurse so I am going into this pretty will informed

Thing is I just done know what I need yo do really I know I need my maths resit as its the only o level I failed bah!

I have no experience so I guess I start of in general healthcare ot community work and take it from there?

I'm super interested in the mental health sector with oh having aspergers, I really find the psychology behind it very interesting and having struggled with my own mental health quite severely during my teens and early 20s I kind of want to give back!

Or I am also toying with midwifery!

Does anyone know what I need to do to get my foot in the door? I have seen the access to health education course that gives you your credits to get into uni is that the only way?

I haven't a clue past getting my maths c or above ( damned gcses Fucking As, Bs and Cs for everything.......E for maths )

Help me nurse ladies

Xxx

I would love to change careers but I have too many commitments now :( good luck!!! Xxx

I eventually want to be a nurse and planned on doing an access course as I have no experience at all and no science subjects. It all worked out too expensive though and they've changed the funding now so it's double the cost it used to be.

I've been applying for healthcare assistant jobs for near on two years and finally got one last month which is a good way of getting experience, getting training that will allow you to apply to uni and earn money. It can be a hard and messy job but not always. You can get them in mental health wards too and in my experience those come up quite regularly. I've landed an amazing job in chemotherapy outpatients where I'll run the clinics. You don't need experience for the job but there's ALOT of people applying for them so make yourself stand out.

Grades are important but I've found it's experience more that unis are more concerned with. You need to show you can cope within a care setting. :)

Hope that was a little helpful lol.

Go for it!
I always wanted to be a nurse, but iv lived alone since I was 16, so bummed about in minimum wage jobs. Making ends meet. And now I have too many financial commitments to study...
Get in touch with your local uni, see what the entry level is. Probably would be better doing the access course. You could even do bank auxiliary nursing assistant to get some experience. Would look good on your application.

Midwifery would be amazing too.

Sorry no actual advice, just wanted to be excited for you xxxx

been waiting for ur post after ur journal revelation xxx

definitely look at nursing homes/hospitals in ur area - apply for bank work and permanent jobs - bank means you can work when there short staffed and need extra but good to move around specialities and see what grabs ur interest x

uni side of things if you get ur maths you may be able to go straight depending on the amount of gcses u have but access course is good to get your foot in door if this not possible x
the girls I trained with who did access course found 1st yr of degree was mainly same as access course so can.be bit repetitive if you can get away without it then do xxx

I still have my uni work and books so if u need guidance I can lend u my books and work to get help along the way xxx

goodluck xxx pm if you need anything xxx

It's funny when I meet people want to get into nursing and I'm wanting to get out lol!!

Anyways.. I'm in Scotland so entry requirements probably be completely different to you in England . But when before I went to uni I got a job as an auxiliary and did bank care assistant at a local nursing home.. It's not essential for getting into uni - up here they look at grades and right personalities not experience, but it certainly gives you a good insight into the job and whether its for you or not..

Check out the uni's around you and Chen the entry requirements and focus in getting what you need, or do an access to

Oops!!

Or do an access to nursing course as they will prepare you and ensure you have what you need to get into uni..

Good luck with whatever u decide xx

The best advice i can give is to get some experience as a care assistant. Do that for a few years you can work through you nvq's which will give the entry requirements and hopefully the trust would second you out. However. Nursing has changed a lot, its not what i came into 10 years ago. My hubby has just done his band 4 training which is a lot more hands on... All i do is paperwork!

Thanks guys!!

The access course is about 800 quid which I could afford but I did the teaching access course a few years ago which has same modules sort of and I found it tedious tbh

I need to speak to my local uni really and get a care job actually I did used to work in a care home when I was like 18 so that must count for something!

I wish I had focused on a career earlier but I left home at 15 and went totally haywire booo lol

Great advice ladies keep it coming

Lynette, I am thinking of studying to be a midwife! So have been have a dig around to try and see what I would need to do to get into uni. My school grade are good but not recent enough so therefor I'd be classes as a mature student! Lol
The access courses seem to be the best way to get into uni and to progress. You don't necessarily need to have worked in the sector before hand it's all down to personality and what they think of you at the selection interview.
The NHS also fund midwife/nursing uni courses so this will help with finances, the thing for me is whether I can walk away from a full time wage!
Good luck with what ever you decide it can be daunting to make a big career change :) x

You could always redo your maths gcse (pretty sure it needs to be c and above in English, maths and science) and then apply to uni and try that way.

You know what, Lynette?

You are a kind, sweet and incredibly driven lady who has experienced and come through so much. I know you can do this and I know you will be absolutely brilliant at it.

You have definitely got it in you to be a MH nurse and I want to be able to sit here in a few years and see you doing it. Basically, I'm going to kick your arse into it because I think you'll be fab at it.

You know I love you to bits, and you know you have the support of all of these ladies to do it.

I'm proud of you for having this drive and vision of where you want your life to be.

Awww that's so sweet ljy xxx I WILL do this I want it badly

 fapatalking

hun, I would say the bet thing you can do is talk to the admissions tutor at your nearet uni. They will advise you on what they want/need from mature students. Then the advice on workin as a care assistant is a good one, it will hhelp be 100% sure it what you want! you have a lot of knowledge from personal experiences, but read around about the other stuff as well as much as you can, and about how others can vary from your and OH's experiences. You'll do it if its really want you want, and the experience is key for ucas applications!

Thanks Emma I am going to go see someone soon at Sheffield uni and have been looking for care jobs that match my wage now which there seems to be plenty of round here!

 fapatalking

brilliant, thats the perfect start - the uni is totally the best place cos mature students can be accepted at their discretion. so its worth a good chat with them about your experience and skills.

Yay! I am in my last year as a student nurse at the moment and it's amazing! Definitely go for it!! I'm not sure about entry requirements but you seem to be on the right track with getting healtcare experience and speaking to your local uni. Also, look at their website, there will be entry requiremetns. I just looked at my uni and they want C or above at GCSE english and maths plus 260-300 ucas points (contributed to by Alevels, Btecs, access courses etc.) Look into it, it may be a case of just getting your maths sorted or it may be an access course but it will be well worth it! Also for care jobs, your local trust might have a healthcare assistant bank that you could join - just a thought!

Good Luck! xx
