Hi Ladies,

I'm desperately after some advice! My 14 week old daughter, Emily, keeps waking (I say waking, but sometimes she's asleep but grunting/thrashing/crying in cot, which stops for a while when I put dummy back in until it falls out again!) every morning between 4-5am without fail, I have to keep getting up to put the dummy back in or if I put her in bed with me, she usually falls back to sleep no problem until she's ready for her morning feed.

Up till about 9/10 weeks, she was sleeping from about 7/8pm until 3am ish, but now, she's having her last feed about 7pm, then wakes between 11pm/12am and again about 3am, each time she pretty much takes a full bottle (5oz). I've tried doing dream feeds about 10/11pm when I go to bed, but she either doesn't take much of the bottle (perhaps not hungry enough after last feed) or won't wake at all to take it and sometimes it resulted in trouble settling her back to sleep so I stopped giving it her about 2 weeks ago.

So when she does wake at 4-5ish, she can't be hungry if she's taken a full bottle about 3ish? I'm thinking perhaps it could be wind as she seems quite unsettled, alot of movement in the cot.

In the day, her sleep varies, I don't have set nap times as i'm never in the house for a full day (school run with elder daughter, walking dogs, looking after horses, shopping etc!) But i'd say she gets enough sleep without it being too much.

I have thought of trying a later bedtime but she can't seem to stay awake after 7ish, even if she has a late afternoon nap.

I didn't have blackout blinds in our room (she currently in cot in our room) but my OH put them up yesterday but it didn't seem to make a great difference as she still wok at 4.15am and I was up and down with her till 5am putting dummy back in 3 or 4 times. She did finally go off but only till 6am when she was hungry for her next bottle. She's never taken/finished a 5oz bottle and only seems to go 3 hours between feeds apart from first stretch in the evening.

She sleeps in a baby sleeping bag, I stopped swaddling her about 6/8 weeks. She doesn't feel too warm/cold but I do wonder if she's cold as when she's cosy and warm in bed with me she goes back to sleep usually.

She did suffer with reflux but I don't think it's that as the symptoms would be throughout the day and after each feed not just early mornings.

She's too young to cry it out and also I don't want her waking her elder sister who has a full day at nursery to attend.

I'm hoping that perhaps when I wean her things might improve?!

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading this long winded post!

Sounds like the 4 month sleep regression - ours started at about that age. No advice really except crying it out wouldn't help anyway and you just have to ride it out!

Robbojoey - our 15 week old is behaving exactly int he same way, the hours of waking, the temporary relief with the dummy, etc, it's pretty much the same as your daughter.

I was getting very frustrated and down for the first few days, but I think it's strongly related to their 14-19 weeks developmental leap (see the Wonder Weeks), and I've accepted that we just have to sit it out. Be flexible, loving and understanding, feed him when he needs to and sit it out. I'm hoping it'll pass in a few weeks.

Totally agree about it being leap related as my daughter had sleep regression around this age too and unfortunately these sleep regressions come and go for a long time - my daughter just had another one at 18 months! Luckily it only lasts a week or 2 and then things go back to normal though x
