I was looking back at my old notes from my previous pregnancy and noticed that it was a whole hour before I was given skin to skin contact with my baby after having a section.

Is this the norm? I do wonder if this was part of the reason that we couldn't establish breastfeeding

Have any of you had experience of this? I was thinking that this time round (I'm likely to have another section) I will specify that I want skin to skin as soon as possible.[/b]

Although its lovely to have skin to skin immediately it doesn't make any difference to bonding or breastfeeding. If it did - no mothers who have a general anaesthetic or deliver prem babies would ever be able to breastfeed as the babies are whisked away.

Tilly was laid on my chest for about 2 mins after my c section. She was then taken away and put in an incubator (which is the norm over here for ALL babies) and I didnt see her again until 2am (she was born at 17.10pm!). i also couldnt breastfeed her although we tried quite a few times but this wasnt until the next afternoon.

Hi Moomum!

I had a c section under general anaesthetic and Joey was placed on my chest 40 mins after he was born. When I woke up he was feeding and we have got on with breastfeeding ever since. I would specify you want skin on skin straight away. How soon this I suppose depends on how long it takes them to stitch you up??

Good luck

I just want to be able to give it my best shot this time round. I really hope it works out for us

I would want skin to skin contact immediately after birth, so put it in your birth plan.I know your having a section but you can write the birth plan with specification of what you want to happen afterwards.

Hi

First time i has Kiara shown by my face for a pic and quick touch then only got my first hold of her after i recovered.

This time i got to hold him (with Bernies help) for about half hour and then after recovery he was mine.
The two times differed i think because the first was an emergency one and second was not .

We're having a section this time too and also want skin to skin contact, i've put in my birth plan that i want skin to skin contact and if they cannot do that then DH wants to have the contact, they have proven that it does calm the LO to still hear the heartbeat and also to adjust to the outside world.
As for breastfeeding if you leave a LO on the mothers chest they will find the nipple themselves, my best mate is a breast feeding councilor and has filled me in with all the important details, although she bottle fed 2 of her 3 she said the easiest baby shes had has been the one with the skin to skin and breast fed, gotta be worth a shot i reckon.

I didn't get to hold Maia until about an hour and a half later, but thats because the paediatricians took her away to be checked over.

with my 1st section they just held my son towards me to give him a kiss and then put him in an icubator until i was in recovery - i found it really cold and sterile so...when i had my 2nd section i waited until i was in the operating theatre and said to the sergeon - if everything was ok could i have a few mins skin to skin - she was really nice and said yes - so long everything her end and my bp etc was fine - when my dd was born she was delivered up onto my chest and we spent 5/10mins snuggling- i cried with happiness because i had felt so cheated with my ds - even the sergeon cried and said it should be standard. this time i will do the same - i dont think you could demad it but just ask if the op is going fine can you please - you could even squeese out a tear if necessary - i'm quite good at that :rotfl:

i didnt properly hold ellouise for about an hour after my section but i have breastfed her for the past 5 1/2 months

hi

during my third section i put in my birth plan, that i wanted my husband to cut the cord and also that skin to skin contact was essential, and i had both of these granted and as far as i can remember i had as much skin to skin as i wanted. i think it was about 30 or 40 mins and then he was dressed and we were taken to the ward.

hope this helps. My advise to you would be that you need to think of all things that you would like to make it the best experience possible for you and your OH. dont let them desuade (SP) you just because you are having a section. i also told them that i didnt want anyone saying what sex the child was, i wanted my DH to see and tell me (even though secretly i already knew).

This is encouraging. You see, the first time round, you just don't know what to expect or what is allowed etc. I have so many things to request that are, I'm sure, normal practice in most hospitals. I don't want to put anyone's noses out of joint, but will politely request what I want. They can only say no huh?

i had an emergency section as baby was born early and was breach. I didnt have skin to skin contact at all. the first time they placed joseph on my chest, he was fully dressed with a hat on! i hadnt had the chance to do a birth plan but next time i will make it clear that i want skin to skin. having said that it hasnt affected our bonding at all as i took to the breast straight away and we both love bfeeding now it is fully established.
