Just curious - how many of you single side breast feed and how many of you swap after aprox 25 minutes?

My midwife and health visitor recommend either but I just wonder what works for the experts.. YOU MUMS!!

I now do single side feeding as I worried that Lara was not always getting the hind milk - she is quite a slow feeder and 25 minutes sometimes was not enough on one breast. Also other times she wouldn't want the other one so occasionally I suffered engorgement and finally having to remember which breast for how long etc did my head in!!!

But... I want to do what is right for Lara.. if I should be double feeding I will go back to that way but there seems to be various opinions supporting both...

??? :wall:

i always feed from one breast until they stop feeding then offer the other breast. that way you know they are getting the fore milk and the hind milk.

Hi

Same here always offered one first then she usually did not want the second one

I was also woried that Leorah wasn't getting any hind milk because she feeds for only 10-15 mins off one breast and never emptys it but she's gaining loads of weight so it must be ok. I express one boob in the morning when they are both full and she has this in a bottle in the evening from my DH. Could you express the rest of the breast so she can have the hind milk later too? If babies are gaining weight well my midwife told me there are no concerns over your milk. :)

Hi

I always offer Olivia both breasts and sometimes had to go back to the first breast again (so in theory that's breast 3!).

When Olivia was very wee I was talking to a paediatric nurse specialising in breastfeeding and she told me that yes our milk has formilk at the start and then hindmilk but it's impossible to know when one starts and one finishes. After the first few weeks Olivia wouldn't feed for longer than 15 mins on one breast so I swapped her to the other breast after 15 mins (or when she came off that one and wouldn't go back on it).

Like skatty says, if the baby is having wet and dirty nappies and gaining weight and is alert then she's getting enough milk.
