He had jaundice whilst in scbu, that was one of the reasons he was being kept in.. he had photo therapy for 5 days, and 24 hours before he came home he was taken off and repeat blood tests done the day he came home.. the bili rubin levels were 172 and the previous day they was 272, do u think they have let him out too soon because yesterday he was pink, and today he is quite orange...

Im worried its going to build up again and will end up back in hospital.. this is all i can find on jaundice..

A somewhat common condition in newborn babies, marked by a yellowing of the skin and caused by the immature liver's inability to process excess red blood cells. Treatment for mild cases will include allowing your baby to spend time in sunlight, though in more severe cases, the baby will be admitted to the hospital and placed under lights which synthesize the sun's rays (minus harmful UV radiation).

Bailey has got yellowing of the whites of his eyes as well as his body being orange..

what would you do, i have midwife coming on monday anyway to hopefully disharge us, but should i contact anyone so she can bring blood tests stuff to check his levels.. or do u think i am being paronoid.. i will try and get a pic so you can see how orange he actually is but wont be until the morning now as ive just settled him..

**edit **

This is a pic of him whilst in hospital, on day 7 he was quite orange there but even more orange today!

obviously comparing him to bradley he is quite orange isnt he..

Not sure at all hun

Have a hug though

My daughter was a little jaundiced when she was born (she wasn't a premie though) and when I mentionned it to the midwives / HV's they told me not to worry (Realy helpful  OK - I'll just stop worrying now then shall I!)

I'd give nhs direct a ring just to be on the safe side hun 0845 4647

Just contacted them. and they said..

The levels should go down so long as he is getting enough fluids...

Well thats made me worse cos what if hes not and it is coming back.. im failing as a mum trying to do whats best, maybe i need to give him bottles to see what he is actually taking.. going to wake him every 3 hours on the dot for a feed and see what its like tommorrow..

Oh god, what if im starving the wee little man!

I know it's easier said than done but try not to panic - and defo dont think you are failing...

Can you still call your midwife - get them to come to the house and check him and put your mind at rest.

Arianna was yellow when we took her home and we just had to make sure she had plenty fluids and sit her by the window for the sun.
If you are BF - just make sure he has plenty wet/dirty nappies - that is a sure sign he is getting plenty milk from you.

       to Bailey

&

       to you!!

Thanks for that sarah..

Yes he does have wet and dirty nappies more dirty than wet though.. i change him when hes due a feed and its always mucky.. and even pees on me :shakehead:

Will see what colour he is tommorrow now and give the midwife a ring, dont want them thinking im being silly, but then again i dont want him to get worse and end up with liver failour.. not really sure what jaundice does if its not sorted but its horrible to see it..

has he any other symtoms sunshine? is he off his milk or anything?

Hi, just a little tip for you...put his moses basket under the window, this will help to get rid of it as well as plenty of water, my second son had it quite bad, he was early and the midwife told me to put him under the window and it worked, good luck hun and try not to worry.x

i would take him to the walk in centre

i never messed about when my 2 were poorly in the first few weeks as they were both prem too
and the dr seemed to take it very serious too seems LO still is not past the due date

bailey must have been under the treatment line or they wouldnt have let him home, dont worry i am sure the midwife wont discharge you if she is worried about the jaundice, is his poo yellow yet? is he taking feeds or is he sleepy?, if you are worried call the on call gp or get the mw out tomorrow.

Hi girls thanks for all your advice..

budge.. he doesnt have no other symptoms just that hes yellow..

hes not refusing feeds or anything but i do find it difficult to wake him through the night, 1st night home he slept from 9.30pm till 4.15am, tried waking him, changing his bum etc and nothing would wake him for a feed.. this is what im worried about hes not getting fluids through the night...

ellieg, he was just under the treatment line, but i thought 24 hours was a bit quick to let him home i didnt think it was long enough to see if it came back or not.. also he sleeps all day and night so i dont know if hes sleepy and yes his pooh's are yellow now have been for a few days...

dionne, im gonna give nhs direct a ring again today to see what else they say..

These are his pictures, 1st one is from the day he came home, he looks quite pink i think compared to the one in the 1st post!

so i do think its come back.. what do u think!

he does look a little jaundice maby. but not much.

Riley developed jaundice after i took him home. the m/w wasnt concerned. and it has gone now.

im sure he will be fine :)

Mason was worse than that after I brought him home. Is it sunny where you are today? get him near the window or outside as much as possible. :)

Sam had this too, and my midwife told me to keep an eye on him if he became lethargic. If he's very sleepy and difficult to wake up for feeds then you should get him checked over.

As long as he's alert and drinking, it should be fine.

Hope things imrove soon....

Aww he looks loads better today.

As everyone has said get him by the window or out in the sun.

xx

Thanks again everyone.. must admit the colour is a little better today compared to yesterday!

Also weve been on a bit of a hike today and its been so hot, hoping that will have worked its magic on him some more..

as for putting him under the window, im scared incase he will get cold, being early i have to keep his temp ok..
