Serious BF Q - posted in feedin n nutrition too....HELP ME PLSSS!!!

Hi ladies...

Ok so a small dilema.

After exclusively BF for 4 week it emerged that Austin had not gained or lost any weight n they were quite worried. If he had not gained in the week after he would have to have been admitted to hospital as a 'failure to thrive baby'...omg...it petrified me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So they recommended I go n get some formula to top him up...which we have n hes like a different baby...so calm m content after 2 weeks of intense crying....it was now obvious I hadnt produced enuf milk.

I was referred to a BF specialist as they couldnt understand why as I was eatin n drinkin plenty...latch was good...was feedin regularly... etc etc

They has overlooked my boob reduction 6 years ago n we had all presumed that if I produced milk in the first place...there would b enough.

It turns out some of my ducts have regenerated n linked up n half havent n I also has less ducts due to the tissue they removed...but that life.

Felt quite emotional...like Id starved my baby but knew it felt like a weight had been liftef to get a definate answer.

So Im now planning to bf in the morning for some lovin bondin in bed with A n top up with formula n FF rest of the day......

HOWEVER...MY BOOBS R KILLING BY THIS POINT IN THE DAY (7PM)....so Im having to pump the milk out to reduce the pain n pressure. Ill give him my milk later but I need to know how to reduce my supply to only produce enough for his morning feed. If u know what I mean.

I dnt want to stop point blank as still want to bf once a day....but cant be doin with pumping every morning n evening.

Ironic that I dnt have enuf to make my baby grow but enuf t build up n hurt...any tips would be fab....

I'm not sure if it works like that. You might be better off doing a morning and evening bf. You will still keep producing throughout the day iykwim?

Yeah I would do a morning and an evening feed. Use formula the rest of the time.

I had the same problem and i now give alternate ff and bf, you have to cut the feeds down one by one or you will become engorged!!

Blimey what a tough situation you were in. I know if u express milk it keeps your supply high so maybe don't do that and feed for a little time and top up with ff? Xx

Does Austin let you know if he's not had enough?? - could you let him latch on at various points throughout the day and top up each feed with formula if he's not got enough.

he tends to let me know straight away if he wants more formula but always seems content straight after book..but than 15mins later we get the tears as he's obviously used his measly amount up that I supplied.

forestlas ....ur rightness I pumped 3oz last night to give him n to take the pain away but ur right that prob why I'm in ago this mornin...gain t bf him at9 ...but only10mins each side.

I think you might dry up fairly quickly if you only feed in the mornings, I did with DD when I went back to work and only fed in the evenings. Would it be possible to feed morning and night and top up with formula the rest of the time? Here's a couple of useful links that may help you, I didn't read though them but your def not alone x

Why don't you try to normal breastfeed and top up every meal with formula?

Could you try him on the boob at every feed, the just offer formula after he comes off?? would he take formula straight away??
