Hello,

My wife and I have been trying to conceive for the past 7 months, but no luck so far. She did a test and all was well, however, hereunder are the results of my test. The doctor said that it could be better, but not impossible to have a baby. What is your opinion? He also gave me profertil to take two pills everyday for the next three months. I'm also not sure what the results hereunder exactly mean and which areas I need to improve.

pH: 8.0
Colour: Whitish/Grey
Volume: 4.0 ml
Sperm Count: 30 x 10^6 /ml total
Morphology: 10% Good
15% Moderate
30% Poor
45% Non-mortile
Viscosity: +
Leukocytes: 2 x 10^6 cells

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Hi Zizou. My partner had a semen analysis not so long ago and he gave a sample of only 1ml, so your 4ml is very good! His results said there were 107 million sperm per ml and if I remember correctly had 15% which were 'good'. His doctor said those results were fine and that he had no problems. I think that anything over 20 million sperm per ml is good so your count sounds fine - maybe the motility is a problem? This means that the sperm dont race around really quickly, and can be sluggish.

Im not sure what the medication he gave you does, but hopefully it will improve the motility of your sperm. I am no expert, but your results sound ok to me, and I've heard stories of couples conceiving with much lower results so I would try not to worry :)

Thanks for your reply Naomi.

My wife is very worried and sad after what the doctor told us, even though he did not sound negative. He only said I need to improve the numbers a bit.

After reading through the internet I found mixed comments, so that's why I posted this, cos I would like some informed answers, being positive or negative, as long as I have them, as the doctor wasn't too specific.

Well, you should be able to get all the answers from your doctor - so I would book another appointment and go there together to get your questions answered. From what I have heard it is possible, and quite likely that your sperm can be improved with lifestyle changes. Perhaps you could make some changes to your diet etc and go back for another test in a few months (if youre not pg by then!) and see if the results have improved?

That's the plan. My wife is almost sure that this week she will get her period, so another opportunity lost, and obviously that ain't helping our morale.

We were looking for second opinions here, just because the doctor we used (not our usual, but from the specific clinic that does these tests) was not so descriptive in his answers, and we're trying to understand how bad - if bad - these test results are.

I agree that your results sound good to me :)

They do like the total for Good and Moderate to = 50%< and yours is only 25% but honestly, i think you have a decent chance based on your semen results overall ;)

7 million able sperm cells per ml is plenty when your sample is 4 ml.

These results are significantly better than my OH and I am currently 7 weeks pregnant without any assistance so keep going and I hope you get lucky soon.
