I've posted in here because I've not got kids etc and I'm just curious.

So...

I am an April baby. I started School aged Four and went into the Early Years and then from there straight into year 1.
My sister is a late Autumn baby. She started school aged ~ 5 and went into Reception and then year 1.

1) What is the difference between Early Years and Reception?
2) How did she end up 2 school years behind me when on paper, we're consecutive years.
3) Why has this been puzzling me for the last decade?

In my understanding - those born after the cut-off of 20th August are then the eldest in their year, with the pupils getting younger through the year towards the next cut-off point.

4) Has the above system changed since I went to Primary school? Does Early Years still exist?

Hi ya,
not sure if I can answer all questions lol!

My little boy started school last Sept, he was 4. Last Sept was the first year that they had introduced the one intake. So basically, all children start school the Sept before they are 5. There are no longer Jan, Easter intakes. So if ur child is born in Sept and they are 5 then they will start school, if they are 4 and not 5 till the following Aug they will start in the same year, even though there could be nearly a year between them.

They will go into reception, I dont think there is early years anymore, there maybe a nursery attached to the school, and that maybe called early years, but it not school. Also legally, I believe that ur child does not have to start school until they are 5? So if they born in Aug for example, they do not have to start school the Sept after they 4, they can wait till following sept and start when they 5, but then they would miss reception and go straight to year 1. I think I am correct in what I saying lol !!

God!! Does that make any sense?

Hope so xx

Sorry, what I should have added is that ... You would now start school the sept after you 4 if you apr baby, your sister would have started school the sept before she 5, you would have both gone to reception. :)

Yes, thank you, that's really helped me! It's a bit of a relief to know it has been a bit simplified now too, to save me getting confused again in the future

Legally children don't have to start school until the term after which they turn 5. So for example my son was born in march, this year he turned 5 and he went from going just in the mornings to going full time hours after the Easter holidays- and I had no choice in the matter.
