Hello everyone,

Been for my scan today and confirmed I have cysts on both ovaries. Results are being sent to dr. What happens next? There is talk of putting me on metformin. How has everyone got on with this if they have been on it? xx

Hi. After I had my pcos confirmed nothing happened at all. I was expecting them to do something or help me in some way but that hasn't happened yet. I asked about metformin as my gp mentioned it before pcos was confirmed but was told it was outdated, however so many other pcos ladies take it I may go back and query this with my gp (it was my consultant who said no). Our next appointment is Feb and we were told our next step will be clomid.

Hi! I have pcos and it took me about a year and a half to be prescribed metformin... I started off on 500mg for 6months, then my gynae put it up to 1500mg because of ttc and now my gp put it up to 2000mg. It has helped regulate my periods because I would go months without having one. My advice is that if it's suitable for you then you should go for it and push for it to be prescribed! I also had ovarian drilling which I think has helped regulate my cycle so I suggest you ask about that aswell :)

Good luck!
xx

Thank you ladies, well my periods are still coming every month despite the lack of ovulation, I thought you only get a period if you ovulate, but apparently not? My periods range from 28-41 days. Does Metformin cause any nasty side effects? and did it help with any weight loss? x

One of the reasons my consultant gave for not letting me try metformin was that it can have nasty side effects. As I've not been allowed to try it I don't have any personal experience of this. Some people experience weight loss when using metformin but not everyone. Is weight an issue for you?

Hey honey - I have PCOS and was diagnosed at 13 as I was having horrendous and irregular periods. This of course wasn't really a concern to me at that age!!! However, as I got older I knew I needed to address my cycle. The best thing I found for me that helped to regulate my cycle was losing weight and exercise (not suggesting you are overweight or anything!! Just saying what worked for me...) and my cycles went from 'impossible to count' to almost 35 days clockwork. I switched to a low-carb and low GI diet and went from an 'overweight' BMI to a comfortably 'Healthy' BMI range (e.g. less than 25). I have been very, very lucky (as a TTC-er in general I mean, PCOS aside) and now have a six month old son. I do actually take metformin now however as I wanted to see if it had any additional effect on me (I have a lovely GP who I chatted to about this and she offered it) as we would like to TTC for number two next year, but have found it has had zero effect really; and I have had no side effects either.

Try not to worry (I know, easier said than done!); PCOS gets a bad rap and sounds scary on paper, but is very manageable once you find a 'formula' that works for you so if you want to try metformin and your doc says it's an option, give it a shot if you want to. Several of my friends have PCOS too and one way or another, their TTC journeys - some long, some short - have all been successful so don't lose faith :) (I don't intend that to sound laissez-faire, I just wanted to let you hear happy endings!) Only one of them used clomid and she ended up with twins - She hasn't slept now in about three years ;) xxxx

Thank you for your replies :)

Weight is an issue for me as I used to be really slim 5ft 4 and 8.7 stone. I am now 10st7! I also have an underactive thyroid so losing weight is a huge battle. I have heard Low GI is good, so I may give that a go. My GP has already suggested metformin, I am just a little nervous as heard it can make you feel sick and give you a bad stomach :S

Hmm well I have been told by 2 pyschics that I will have twins in the future....eeeek!!! xx
