This is probably going to sound daft, but when do they say is a safe time for baby to be born, obviously 40 weeks is the safest time for baby to be born,????

babies are 'viable' from 24 weeks, apprently their survival is around 50% or something ....Im not sure at the survival rate after that to be honest  I think from 37 weeks they are considered full term and can be born safely though. I dunno really, lol. Im a great help :D

well i'm 30 weeks tomorrow so i am wondering the survival chances if my baby was born now.

Pretty high I would have thought, however, it really depends on many things including the baby's development and current weight etc.

The MW I saw last week told me that some babies born at 32 weeks do better than those at 35 weeks. It's all just dependant on many factors AFAIK.

You keep cooking your LO for a while yet!

I think that its babycentre which gives you the survival rates and at your point they are pretty good. They go up week by week.

I thought it was a bit lower still. And there are always concerns for moderate or severe disabilities in babies born that early. Technology is improving all the time, but there are still limits.

One article I read said

Over 25 weeks of gestation, babies have a sufficiently high chance of surviving and low risk of developing severe disability and intensive care should normally be given.

I think babies born after 30 weeks are usually considered as having a good chance.

Another article said

At 28 weeks more than 96 percent of babies survive; at 24 weeks the rate is 50 percent; and at 22 weeks, two percent.

If you are talking about bare survival a baby is viable at 24 weeks so as someone said above 50% of babies born at 24 weeks would live BUT a baby born that early is very likely to have complications, some of which can be long term, very serious and/or last his whole life.

I read somewhere that at 34 weeks 99% of babies not only survive but shouldn't have long term complications either.

The survival rate at 30 weeks is about 90% and goes up really quickly between 30-37 wks. 37 wks is considered term and obviously after this is the most optimum time to deliver, but once you reach 30 wks you are in a really good position to have a healthy baby. When I reached 30 wks my Dr. told me I could relax as it was a massive milestone and the survival rate after this point is very high.

Thanks for your replys, i was just curious more than anything as this is my first baby.

I echo what Sherlock said- babies born at or after 28 weeks have a 90%+ chance of survival. This obviously leaves up to 10% of babies that don't survive but my friend the neo-natal nurse said that a baby is considered 'BIG'! if it arrives at 28 weeks plus! I am pretty sure that after 34 weeks, the lungs have been able to develop 'enough' that baby might not need much medical intervention after birth and is not at great risk. For me personally 30 weeks was a real mental barrier to pass as I was born at 29 weeks gestation 30 years ago and medicine has come a long way since then. Just think what an increase in the survival rates are for babies born at that stage today. Amazing...
