In the early hours of Saturday 5th July morning I was woken by period pains and the overwhelming need to wash my dressing gown! Haha. The pains were coming and going in waves the same as my false/early labour with Isla so I was thinking it was the start of things. I eventually got back to sleep and by morning they were pretty much gone. I got the odd one throughout the day but completely random so I thought they were more of a nippy type of Braxton hicks. I must have known something was imminent though as I had Rich finish the last of the cleaning and hoovering, we got the car seat and base set up in the car and I made sure my bag was ready, including my dressing gown!
For dinner we fancied an Indian (not even spicy, just a korma!) so I drove to go collect it. When I got back, just getting out the car (about 6:30pm) I felt an odd sharp sensation down below and remember thinking 'what was that!?' Got indoors and felt a little wet escape into my knickers. I got on the loo and prayed I hadn't just wet myself a little haha. Turns out I was now leaking waters!
We ate curry... But I was starting to get nervous now, so didn't enjoy it half as much as I should have!
After about an hour or so I started to get some pains that were a bit pokier than the ones I'd had before. So we put Isla to bed at around 8:30/9ish and then I called the Oasis suite (midwife led unit within the hospital). As I thought my waters had gone she wanted me to come in to be checked.
Rich seemed to be in some sort of denial about everything. After being persuaded that yes, we do need to go to the hospital! Rich got his sister round to babysit Isla. He then asked if we could leave in half hour after the football! He did not get the response he was hoping for! Left for the hospital and had some rather nasty contractions in the car and on the way in. Got to the hospital at about 11pm.
Midwife saw the contractions I was having and said she'd see how I went over the next hour or so. When she walked out the room Rich came out with "an hour or so!??" Still in denial as he thought we'd be going back home haha. Midwife came back after a while and we were moved to the birthing room. She checked me, baby was back to back (great "/) and I was 4cm. After a comment of "6 more to go then..." Rich finally realised that yes, the baby is coming! Got into the birthing pool shortly after this. The water was amazing and really did help for a bit! I also started on the gas and air at this point. From here things moved pretty quickly and after 45 minutes of really really intense contractions I was ready to push. This is where the water made a massive difference again as I could easily shift position and it was lovely to be able to just get on with it. I was pushing for 14 minutes before he arrived at 1:29am and I caught him out of the water myself which was amazing! We had delayed cord clamping and then Rich cut the cord. We had some watery cuddles and then he was passed to Rich so I could get out of the water.
Had a managed third stage so placenta was out in no time and I got my little boy back for skin to skin and he latched onto the breast really well and fed for ages. It was just amazing. I got everything I could have wished for from my birth plan. And aside from not believing it was happening at first, Rich was amazing and I don't know how I'd have coped without him rubbing my back and letting me hang off of him before and in the pool and helping me with my breathing throughout. Also escaped again with no stitches. Our boy weighed 7lb 2oz which was nice after Isla had weighed 8lb 1oz! And established labour all together was an hour! Midwife recommended a home birth next time haha (there's not supposed to be a next time!! I have my one of each
