even renting is expensive
i found out in the Kent and Sussex courier that Tonbridge and Malling are raising the council tax by 4.95 percent
making even renting in this area hard
MAKES ME SO MAD :x

We rent at the moment - can't afford to buy just yet and we knew we didn't want to live here long-term. Hoping to move down to Sussex this summer, so I expect we won't be able to afford to buy for a long while yet.

It is ALWAYS better to buy if you can.

If you rent then you are always throwing money away. If you buy then even if the financial climate is bad you will make money one day,at worst your less likely to lose cash!

I bought a house outright when I was 18 that was £24,500. We lived in that until this year, when my mother decided she wanted to swap houses with us.

The house swap itself was a bit of a fiasco, I won't go into details, but anyway it worked out in the end.

We swapped with my mother, and got a remortgage so that we could give my mother some money (as her house was worth a lot more than ours).

So now, she is living in our old house which she owns outright (which is now worth around £120k), and she has some money to live off.
And we are living in her old house (which is worth around £300k) and we're paying off a £60k mortgage.

So we got a good deal I'd say!

Xena..
You got a peach of a deal there then..
Your mum was very generous

Rent is £450 pcm

I love it although I wish I knew a good gardener

ETA Sorry bout the size, i dont seem to be able to shrink it

We rented for years but travelled alot so it suited our lifestyle. We now have a mortgage. We had to save a huge deposit but its been worth it. I don't think we would have started a family if we were renting. Because we have our campervan, although we're settled and 'tied' down so to speak we still have alot of freedom and can get away whenever we feel like it pretty much.

we have just got our first house :cheer: BUT its only renting, we are thinking of renting for about 6 months then hopefully going to buy, we just want to make sure we can afford to pay everything before getting a mortgage!! :D

WOW! Thats my kinda place!!! I'd love somewhere like that :D

We're renting at the mo. To buy the house we're in (3 bed semi) is over £240k and we're not exactly getting much for the £££. We're looking to buy maybe next year as DD will be leaving school then. Been looking at Runcorn where I originally come from and we can get somewhere massive in comparison for the same price as the house we're in.

I bought a house in 2000 with ex hubby for £47.5 k and sold it sept 2006 for £97k. I couldn't afford to buy on my own now and I earn a pretty decent salary when I'm working and all I could afford is a small house in a bad area. Something's gotta give as people like nurses, police and the like simply cannot afford to buy anymore, its stupid!

We're going for Shared Ownership. Just in the process of it all going through at the moment and hoping to complete on the 29th Feb. We didn't want to rent but couldn't afford a full mortgage so we're buying 50% of a house and rent the other part.

Good luck with it :D

WOW  that cottage is lovely and £450 and month a bargin
well done you

This is a subject which is bugging me a lot at the moment. Maximum we can afford is £130,000 and thats the top top top of our budget.

Sounds ok and we can get a nice 3 bedroom house for that... but not in the area we want :wall: We want to live over near my family which happens to be near best school in town so I can prob get a 2 bed terraced for that price. But I really want 3 bed with garden :(

I rent at mo whilst we are looking :)

i got on the property ladder as soon as i could afford it, aged 23, my DH did the same, so when we got together 6 years ago we bought together and a massive cost of 50k just outside edinburgh, so we have a small mortgage, the house has gone up to about £150k now, people keep saying we should get something bigger etc but we're happy where we are just now.

They are due to open a railway station in a couple of years that will connect our village to edinburgh centre, its estimated we'll have a 20% hike immediately, so we're doing it up to sell then.

Hopefully get something further out in the stick with a barn for the motors
