Hello :)

I have my 20 weeks scan tomorrow and I forgot to ask last time if I need to drink lots of water for the 20 week scan or is that just for the 12 week scan?
Last time I had a drama. First I didn't have enough water so it wasn't clear enough, then there was too much water and the screan was pitch black so I had to empty my bladdar and it was still pitch black. Don't want that to happen again.

Thanks :) xxx

You have to drink water again i'm afraid lol On my letter it said to drink at least a pint. x

Sorry to offer entirely conflicting advice (spanner in the works girl lol) but I didnt drink anything before an emergency 18 week scan or my 21 week scan... I was told it wasnt necessary and my scans were perfect :)

I was actually in the loo having a wee when the called me for our appointment

I didn't have a full bladder at any of my scans to be honest and it didn't make a difference!

Oh ooohhh. Maybe I will just drink a 500 ml bottle and see how that goes :) x

Drinking water helps to get a clear picture of the pelvic organs (Uterus and ovaries) but is usually only necessary for early scans. By 20 weeks they should be able to get a clear enough picture so I wouldn't go out of your way to ensure you have a full bladder. If they do have any problems the worst that will happen is that they will get you to drink some water and try again.
I never drank any water for any of my scans past 12 weeks and they were all fine.
Good luck for your scan by they way! Hope all goes well :)

It said on my letter for 12 weeks to drink a pint, but no mention on 20 week letter, so I assume as you are half way, there's plenty to see.
I was sent to have a wee half way through my 12 week as my bladder was a little too full and when I came back to picture hadn't changed one bit.

I was to for my 20week scan as on the first one they kept pushing on my belly & made me busting for a wee lol. Tbh I just had a few glasses of water before mine & both came out fine the 1st was clearer but thats coz they zoomed in on the second one (pictures that is) x

I got told by my midwife and the sonographer that water isnt needed this time around because the baby is big enough to be seen clearly on the scan x

My scan is next Tuesday and the lady who booked it for me told me a full bladder is not necessary for a 20+ week scan but may be necessary for a 30+ week scan if that makes any sense at all . xx

No they're not routine here only if it's necessary, last time I got one because the placenta had been low at my 20 week scan so I got an extra at 32 weeks , I know the placenta's in a good place this time so I reckon I won't get to have an extra scan this time . xx

I've got my scan on Thursday and am a bit worried about this as have been having bladder issues and need to wee so much! Will try and drink about a pint about an hour before and hopefully that'll do the the trick and I manage to keep it in....! Good luck with your scan :) xxx

I had bladder paranoia at my 20 week scan, as it hurt so much at my 12 week one (I was absolutely bursting!). So I went for a wee 1 hr before, 20 mins before, and 10 mins before (the last time after getting permission!!) , to be totally empty. Still had really clear pics though, so like others have said I don't think it makes a difference :D

Thanks :) Oh do you get 30+ scans?

At my hospital everyone gets a 32 week scan

I booked mine after my 20 week one....

Lucky you get to see your little one again in 11 weeks!:) There was no mention of it at mine so I guess they don't. Maybe they will do a scan when I get back to NZ.
The 20 week scan is such a good feeling! And now I feel bubs kicking. Typical waited until after the scan to start!
:) xxxx
