Quick question about chicken......

I am making up a packet mix recipe for Chicken Chasseur. I havnt made it before, but on the packet it says to brown the chicken then transfer to casserole dish with rest of ingredients. Do you have to brown the chicken first or can you just throw everything in and put it straight into the oven? It will be cooking for an hour so im sure the chicken will be cooked, just wondered why you have to brown it first?
 
browning it will make sure it definatly is cooked
also i think it may seal in the flavor?

Browning it will seal in the flavor and juices stopping the chicken from going dry and rubbery feeling.
